On Saturday (Feb 18), I attended my first train show since 2020, incidentally the same one as the last train show I went to - the Great Train Show in Ventura, California, located in the Ventura County Fairgrounds (and just a few yards away from the Ventura Amtrak station).

It was somewhat smaller than the previous one, with less vendors and less layouts, but it was great to be at a train show again nevertheless. It was cool to have the atmosphere interrupted by the horn of the prototype Amtrak Pacific Surfliner passing by.

N scale was decently represented, but there wasn't a whole lot that I really needed to get.

Still, I spent $39 on a my train show haul: A half-dozen cheap rolling stock shells (50 cents each!) for practicing my weathering skills on, a Faller concrete fence for my station platform, a pair of pre-cut turnout cork roadbed pieces, a pair of BLMA trackside electrical boxes, and my best find, a pair of Blue Point manual turnout switches for $5(!) and spent $20 on a stripper...Er, uh, I mean, a *WIRE* stripper. One of the 50-cent car shells was a truck-less Atlas UP ore car. I took the wheel-less trucks from one of the other cars (which had MTL couplers on them), added Athearn metal wheels to it and added weights in the bin, so I could re-purpose it as a "Maintenance-Of-Way" car dragging around a Woodland Scenics Dust Monkey pad to clean my track!

PnP Trains hooked me up with some more goodies.

Another Amtrak Charger, and a few new cars too

I figured I would need more Chargers, so I got another one as well.

And for those of you out there that were wondering which decoder to use… here is the Digitrax quiet type.

Oh yea, the K4B decoder will also work, but it won’t have rear lights. If you plan to always tail to tail MU these engines that could be an option for you if you can’t find any of the K4A types.

A little warning on the Digitrax decoder - Though it's fully-compatible operationally, some of the components on top of that decoder prevent the shell from closing completely after it's installed.

I didn’t have a problem with the Digitrax non sound version, but a friend wasn’t able to get a TCS WOW sound installed for that very reason.

Are you saying that Digitrax DN163K4A decoder does fit and the shell on the ALC-42 has no issue? Also are the super liner cars same height as locomotive? Info for the future possibly :)

I had no issue putting it in my 301, so I would say yes it works fine. I didn’t install the lighting kit at this point. I did notice that the shell didn’t want to snap into the lower part of the body easily, but a bit of wiggling fixed that. I don’t think that was decoder related, that seemed more I got things in the wrong spot related.

the Chargers are slightly taller than the P42s but still shorter than superliners.

Post-human delivered this wee beauty, a Paasche single-action external mix siphon feed airbrush.

It replaces a cheaper airbrush whose hose inconveniently and quite rudely broke whist Moose was using it last weekend. Couldn't find a replacement hose, plus discovered a metal fragment in the cheaper airbrush when disassembling it for cleaning, much to Moose's surprise, so replacement was definitely in order.

Unfortunately, have to wait until an adapter for the new airbrush's hose arrives so that it hopefully connects to the Harbor Freight air compressor. Hooves are firmly crossed!

With these, most of the what was for first round purchase upon starting MRR a little over 2 years ago has been acquired. Always think that but then some other loco or rolling stock comes along, becoming another must have... like the Grand Union car and Middletown & NJ car.... LOL

Ok, so I found out this issue and I know the fix for it. When I did my 301, the body popped right back into place, with a little wiggling. I just did 301 for a friend, much the same… but when I did his 302 the body wouldn’t go back on at all. If you look inside there is a casting inside the loco on the roof that looks like a square with one side missing. This hits the diodes on the end of the decoder board. I shaved down that square and the shell fit back on like a dream. So yes, there is an issue, and the fix is pretty easy.

Got these from a semi local individual, through ebay.
Have a total of 4 of the white REio Grande coffee mugs.
And 1 Rio Grande Railblazer mug. This one was unexpected!
But, both are a nice addition to my glass collection!

Was going to offer 2 of the white mugs, but a friend decided to take them! Just holding them until the TCA show in Denver in April.
However, IF anyone is interested, I MIGHT have access to maybe 4 more of the white mugs.
Let me know if interested, and I'll see what I can do!

Friday a soldering station, desoldering braid, and 5 piece scratch brush set. Saturday 2 Rix Products early highway overpass kits, Micro-Trains tap and drill set and 1134 & 2004 couplers, Digitrax 5 DN163A0 decoders. Getting harder not to do some work on equipment.

The three Walthers Pole Barn sets I pre-ordered came in today. I don’t have a specific plan for them on my next layout but I figured the four structures in each kit would lend to a bunch of different possibilities.

I previously ordered (and already received) a couple of their Modern Steel Warehouse and Modern Transload terminal for the same reason. I have also pre-ordered three of their Split Level house and two of their lumber Transload terminal. All of the industries look like they have plenty of kitbash potential.

It seems like a lot but since I’ve been a big whiner over the last couple of years that Walthers doesn’t have as much variety in N scale modern-ish era kits (as they do in HO) I figure I should put my money where my mouth is and do what I can to show them that there is a vibrant n scale market for modern structures.

Also-the weathered Railbox MTL runner pack.

Some grubby pieces of rolling stock:

    20230227_101411.jpg

And the MT new tooling PS2 2 bay hoppers. Very pleased with these. A little bit more $ but they are the best detailed of this prototype that I have seen.
