It's neat and the smoke looks better than usual model smoke but you should have said "...the first modern steamer with smoke". Arnold Rapido had smokers back in the ancient N scale days. Doug
Thank you Doug, 100% correct. They were N&W 2-8-8-2s manufactured for Rapido by Rowa and were well built models.
So I guess I need someone to explain this to me? Why is it a good thing to have a smoking steamer? I thought the smoking fluid left an oily residue on everything when used? Or is this something different from the old chemical, what was it? Seuthe liquid? It hardly looks realistic and makes it look more toy like to me, one more thing that sets N scale back 20 years.
Bah thanks, Doug! I did not know that. That was many moons ago, beyond my time, which is surprising that they had the technology to do that. That's awesome that they were able to do that. Not sure how to edit a post so if anyone knows if I can edit something I already posted please let me know I can't find an edit button. Thank you in advance. @Allen, I guess everyone has a preference, but as this is a rare feature on any N-scale locomotive, it seemed to help make it one of the best N-scale sellers this year. Either that or just the fact that it is a big boy. You can turn off the smoke if you don't like it but I think many think it is something different and unique.
I just ordered one and am looking forward to it! Oily residue? Cool! I’ll just sprinkle some grimy colored chalk on that area, take a brush and streak it down the side, instant weathering just like the real ones! I’ve bought several BLI locomotives, both in N and in HO, and I love what they are doing for this hobby. Great stuff in my book!
Looks like every manufacturer that wants to take a chance is building Big Boys. Athearn's versions have been around for awhile... and were very good. Now Kato is doing a dual motored Big Boy as well. This is the third variation of the Big Boy with smoke. My first question is about the mechanism being used on the BLI model. Is it a single motor (like Athearn)or a dual motor (like Kato)? White smoke does not look realistic for either coal powered or bunker C oil powered. It is an interesting upgrade for N scale steam locomotives... but the 'purists' may be offended. The model does look great in any event, but the pre-existing units and pending Kato model may affect sales.
I love smokers. The smoke may not be the last word in realism but when the locomotive is traveling at speed, the realism increases. As far as the oily residue, the only place I have ever seen it with my smokers is on the locomotive itself and that is hardly a negative, considering how oily and dirty the prototypes got/get. Plus, it makes the train room smell great! Doug
Not at all for me. I don't always run the smokers but I have for fairly long times, before, and no problems. Doug
It is a beauty to look at. BLI's sound, the P4, is very nice! The smoke? Naw. Why? Well, at the St. Cloud show, I was enjoying watching the Lionel and O steamers smoking it up a lot, all day long. Looked neat and was a lot of fun. But, still tasting it a few days later bothered me. Which helped me remember the lingering taste from smokers back in my younger days. Enjoy the smoke, but I will pass. Am looking forward to a review or two by folk here or at Spookshow.
MegaSteam makes scented smoke fluid. I’ve used the coal and oil scented ones. But they also have flowered scents and peppermint, gingerbread, etc. Lots of good stuff to keep the bad smell/taste away. (And they are designed to smoke very well, which they do.) Just a thought
I have Coal-Fired Steamer, Marx Scent, and Original Cedar. I also have about 3/4 bottle of genuine Marx fluid. I like the Original Cedar best. Doug
