    Some of the reader comments shows just how little the public knows about trains. :(

    I was watching the Ft Madison camera waiting for #4 and it never came. I found a live feed from a KMBC news helicopter and it was clear it wasn't going anywhere. Unfortunately, it is now reported 3 fatalities, 50 injured. One fatality was the dump truck driver, and two passengers on the train. There was a lot of activity around the lounge car long after the others were cleared so I assume they were in that car.

    latest update;
    3 dead, one truck driver, 2 passengers. This could and prolly will change. AMTK operating at speed 90+/-mph. FWD facing loco cam available, but not seen publicly as yet. A lousy turn of events. The 2 trucks I have hit, I was soooo lucky to not derail, and be on the bottom of many thousands of tons of iron and hazmat. Its just never gonna end well, when someone pulls onto a crossing in front of a train, any train.

    Morons out there advocating the banning of trains. They are mostly of a particular political bent which I shall not name.

    Hey- If they don't want to eat, be warm in winter, wish for more trucks on roads, etc, etc,.... Well, some folks just NEED to learn the hard way, before the dim little bulb between their ears comes on, with an accompanying big OOPS.

    I read it as satire for the gun control issues. The ban the assault trains comments to me were comical. Sure the TRAIN hit the truck, but who put the truck there? There is a reason the tracks are called “the right of way”. The ones that were uneducated were the people comparing European high speed rail with our shared freight/passenger. First off high speed rail would work here if we would just get on board financially (easier to do in Europe they are not entirely profit driven), and we would have to make it convenient. I know I’m oversimplifying it a bit, I don’t feel like writing a thesis on the issue, but if we were to have high speed rail, it would be dedicated tracks with no crossings, and therefore no train vs trucks.

    The venue in which I read the comments indicated above featured those who were dead serious about banning trains.

    I have to wonder if the people understand cause and effect. Goods need to move. If you ban trains goods move over hiways, which are already overloaded without the additional 5000+ extra trucks (per train) it would take to move said goods. Didn’t we learn anything from the 70’s. But I mean hell, oil companies would get even richer, pollution would get worse, traffic would be snarled 24/7, your overnite shipments will be here next month and the list goes on. Sometimes I think it would be best if we went back to an agrarian world.

    Sadly people are just that disconnected from reality today. Just like idiots who believe we could get rid of farms as being unnecessary, because they can just go to a grocery store and get it there instead.... Yet every year we abandon more and more rail lines, and make them into "recreational" venues. When we need to be growing them instead. :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

    Reported as going 90 MPH. I'm amazed that many cars could stop that quickly, even on their sides. The engineer may have hit Emergency before the collision.
    Looks like the lead engine stayed on the tracks.

    Looks like those alignment control coupler and drawbars did their job too, as it all stayed together.

    Latest update that I saw changed it to four dead. One in the hospital didn't make it.
