I'm used to seeing a cast B&O capital dome centered on the smokebox door, so I was thinking PRR with a circular plate in the same spot, but then the low headlight mounted on the pilot is wrong for that. Perhaps it's B&O and someone liberated its smokebox door casting or it was one without it? Perhaps it's all been modified for use on a shortline? I couldn't match those circular handrails exactly. It has an air tank mounted high on the boiler, so that may also be a clue.

I tried looking at other RR's rosters, from that vicinity. Such as NKP, W&LE and family. Nothing found there. Hmmm. Nothing found matching for the Erie RR. C&O was not in that vicinity. NYCRR System/family? Headlight sure looks wrong.

Interesting how difficult it is to locate steam engine rosters, on-line. They are either just a list of classes, and their attributes, or links to sites which are almost worthless.

Yes, I can't agree with you more. (y) It's as if people put up a website without much thought to its usefulness. The other thing that makes me crazy is that if you do a search for images of a particular locomotive type, the results are often of models with very, very few of prototypes. I normally use my books for such searches, but sometimes I'm after a quick look on the Internet and what I usually find is indeed worthless.

CR 6494 on Horseshoe curve. Back on page 1 of this tread, I posted a pic of the 6494 in Chattanooga TN. She was a regular visitor there for a few years and was/is my favorite CR locomotive. It was a bit ironic that after seeing this locomotive so much on the NS in TN and GA that she would be the very first engine leading the very first train that I saw on my very first trip to Horseshoe curve. I'll admit that the significance of that was lost on me at the time but now I realize that was truly a cool moment in time.

That's really cool. With over 2,150 units on CR's roster around the time, that's indeed amazing to have seen the 6494 in such diverse locations. :)

The ATSF F45 ended up as BNSF 6550, one of only three F45s to survive into BNSF. This locomotive is what cemented my 2001 modeling year, as I got the Athearn Genesis model a few years ago. The three F45's were laid up with the business cars in Topeka, but they were scrapped in 2002. Interestingly, 6550 was the only F45 to gain ditch lights, which means it was the only one of the three with the ability to lead a train. I'm not sure if it ever did though.

They can be seen at the end of this BNSF shop tour video:

Topeka does a lot of major rebuilding for BNSF, mainly electrical work like traction motor and generator rewinding. I'm not sure how or why they ended up in Topeka though. Maybe they planned to rebuild them for the business train, or they took parts from them to support other locomotives.

A beast indeed - an MLW M636! Having seen an M630 and an M640 in person - built on the same frame, they're big and beautiful. Alco inside!

This one is boarder line if it was CSX at this point or still Seaboard System. Either way, at that time, it was extremely rare to see SBD/CSX power on the Southern/NS in Chattanooga. This may in fact be the only shot I ever got of a unit in Family Lines paint on Southern/NS rails in Chattanooga. It's also worth noting that the track to the left of the train is CSX while all the other trackage is part of NS DeButts Yard.

I've continued turning @BNSF FAN 's photo and your post over in my mind for almost two weeks, but couldn't think of any B&O power like this. Then this afternoon I thought about your "articulated" and "B&O family", plus BNSF FAN's " ... somewhere in northern PA" and the Buffalo Rochester & Pittsburgh came to mind! It was purchased by the B&O in 1932. Sure enough, it's a former BR&P 2-6-6-2, B&O Class KK! Everything matches, boiler top air tank, semi-circular handrails on the smokebox, headlight low over the pilot and the number series.

Yay! With the three of us, mystery solved. :):):)
