I have been searching, without success, for a N'scale 0-6-0 yard switcher with a slope back tender and DCC. Or at least one that is DCC ready. Could there be one out there I have overlooked? Am I looking for the chocolate covered carrot and there isn't one?? Is it possible that one of the manufacturers are planning one, and not yet available? Hawkdriver
Bachmann makes a DC 0-6-0 in N scale, with a slopeback tender, but I don’t know how “DCC-Ready” it is.
It’s not at all DCC ready. The motor leads are on the front of the motor, and the motor is not isolated from the frame. Requires complete disassembly to add DCC. I had one and had a decoder professionally installed by one of the advertisers on this site; he did a great job and even added a working front headlight! It wasn’t a cheap date, though. Jim
@hawkdriver Moose wouldn't mind one as well. Tried to convert an old version of the Bachmann 2-6-2 to 0-6-0 DCC, but it did not go well. The newer version is supposed to be a significant improvement, but would still be a total disassembly as Jim mentioned.
I wouldn't mind having one as well (I'd even settle for a 0-8-0...I know that Walthers made one but I passed at the time) but getting a good running 0-6-0 has been difficult for MRFs in the past and it seems like they don't want to try anymore.
I took a Model Power / MRC 2-6-0 and converted it to DCC with an NCE decoder in the tender. Then pulled the front pony truck, shortened the pilot and voila! An 0-6-0! It's not a difficult modification, and I did it 4 years ago! It still works great, too. https://www.trainboard.com/highball...and-black-hills-ry.69565/page-20#post-1063250
A number of railroads took 2-6-0s, 2-6-2s, and 2-8-0s and converted them to switchers. The MP 2-6-0 will work but the drivers would have been replaced with 52”. The MDC/Athearn 2-6-0 might work-their 2-8-0 divers might share gears and axle sizes for the swap. The wide driver spacing would be typical of such conversions. The MDC/Athearn 2-8-0 could be used as is be removing the pilot trucks and plating over the rear diver slot and shortening the main rods. The CB&Q did the same thing with their early Baldwin D Class Consolidations. Because the motor is in the tender the mech should balance okay. Charlie Vlk
