Moose wondering: where do others get their subscriptions for magazines, 1. publisher, or 2. other source?

Moose wanting to renew subscription to Classic Trains, but $27.45 renewal seems awfully steep for four issues.

Noticed that there are some websites like DiscountMags.com that offer much lower prices; Moose finds it odd that they can charge so much less than the publisher: Are they trust-worthy?

The local library system does not carry Classic Trains...

The local store near me has both Trains, MR, and Classic Trains. I just look at them and if it's a good issue, I'll buy it.

That's within a dollar of what I paid for a Classic Trains annual renewal a few weeks ago. It's my only subscription and I really enjoy the magazine, so I don't wince too much at the price. My concern with outside subscription services is that if something goes wrong, a fix might be elusive and I don't know if my credit card information will be well guarded. I'd just rather deal directly with a publisher.

Kalmbach often tries to interest me in a Trains subscription. I gave up on Trains some years ago after subscribing to it for many decades. I enjoy my trackside time with railfan photography, but my interest in modern railroading is not what it once was.

Thank you both for your replies... :)

That's a concern Moose has as well.

That's what Moose used to do when the local grocery store carried Classic Trains up until Moose started a subscription. Said store no longer carries any MRR magazines - don't know why, possibly just a supply issue.

Maybe try the local B&N, or just renew the subscription with the publisher ... Decisions, decisions... :hohum:

Dropped everything some years ago. I have noticed that my local Wally World has model RR magazines. Have yet to spot one which will add to my enjoyment. Seems like I can get so much information on-line these days....

What is the cost of a single issue times four?

Classic Trains sells for $9.95 Ea on the newsstand. Given the excellent content, I'm okay with my subscription price for 4/Issues/Year.

Just looking to save some money by finding lower cost alternatives to a Kalamach subscription.

Moose wondering if getting a subscription through other sources might be risky.

I should add that Kalmbach pissed me off a bit by auto-renewing my subscription. I never permit this sort of thing anywhere. I paid for it a year ago using PayPal. We since withdrew all that we had in PayPal, so Kalmbach's charge went through PayPal and to my wife's local bank account where the charge hit. My wife asked me what the charge from Kalmbach was for and I had no idea. I looked at my account and learned what had happened. I'm okay that my Classic Trains subscription is set for another year, but I was aware of its upcoming expiration and was going to act on it myself.

I wonder how this could have happened? Is there any way to prevent it from occurring again?

I couldn't find any sort of checkbox on Kalmbach's website to decline auto-renewal, so I'll have to phone them. I used to pay by check, so will likely revert to that in the future.
