Ouch. Been there done that but without the stitches… I used medical tape to close it up and then just was really careful.
As soon as I saw muscles, tendons, etc. in the exposed wound in the back of my hand, I knew it was going to take more than tape to fix! Then the blood started flooding in around the edges, so I grabbed a handful of paper towels in the garage, and clamped them around it with my other hand. I used the cut hand to open the door into the house (which confirmed to me that nothing really serious was damaged), and walked in, pronouncing that I needed to go to the ER. The wife said; "What happened; are you sure?!" almost as soon as she saw the blood soaked paper towels. She grabbed a clean towel and her purse from the kitchen, and off we went... Luckily the neighborhood ER-in-a-box was only ~5 minutes away. The Doc said I was really lucky and just barely missed the tendon that spreads/extends the thumb, else it would have required surgery by a specialist. Having field-dressed and skinned deer and small game before, and even helped my dad butcher them, the appearance of the exposed muscles and tendons did not shock me, but was actually kind of surreal. I wasn't sure whether the cut through the skin had slid over afterwards, concealing a deeper cut. Of course, when I got to the ER, they had me flex my hand, thumb and fingers back and forth to ensure everything was okay.
As I posted yesterday, I was away from home for several weeks. Excited to have this waiting for me when I returned. I know most folks who ordered these received them some time ago so not exactly the first kid on the block with this one. Acquiring the set was all about commemorating my 2016 trip on The Canadian. Sharon's parents treated us to the ride. Only catch was they wanted to split the rooms up boy/girl style because they were worried they couldn't climb into the upper bunks at their age. My late father-in-law was in the early stages of dementia at the time. The first night was uneventful, but the second and third nights he woke up about a three, turned on the lights and started getting dressed for breakfast. He was good natured about it, but I am not sure he was completely convinced when I told him to crawl back in his bunk. I highly recommend taking The Canadian. While three was a bit early, I do suggest getting up before the sun. Grab a cup of coffee in the nearest dome car and go upstairs to watch the sunrise. I never had more than one companion and there is something special about that experience for me. I much prefer the classic domes to the modern panorama cars. The 360 degree view is unbeatable. in2tech, Actually there are 5 boxes in 4 styles in the pictures. Not sure why Rapido went to that much trouble. The large white box in the back contains the 2 bookcase volumes of 5 cars each. That is the basic set. The color box marked "The Canadian" contains 3 Prestige cars in separate jewel cases. The black and white box marked "Le Canadien" contains a 3-car add-on set, again in jewel cases. The 2 color boxes with dome cars each contain a single jewel case with a, you guessed it, dome car. The cars really do look terrific. I am eagerly awaiting the locomotives, delayed unfortunately, to complete the train. Now I need a place to run the thing. Stay safe,
My cut went from the base of my thumb across my wrist diagonally and I nicked the tendon in the middle, cutting about 4 or 5 strands (you can still feel the spot on my tendon almost 40 years later). We were over an hour away from the nearest ER or Doc-in-a-box at a lake house. I was 8 or 9 at the time and I was kinda amazed it didn’t really hurt that bad, and it was interesting to see the tendon and muscle move as I flexed my fingers. It took a second or two for it to fill up with blood. I put my knife away, grabbed my wrist and went to the house. My mom who is usually the calm one flipped out, my aunts worked on calming her down, my dad just said “oh Sally calm down, we cut ourselves worse than this at work all the time. Michael come here let’s get you cleaned up.” So we washed it out, and that’s when the pain came. Lol. Dad had me pinch the cut together as he put little strips of tape on it like stitches, after I was “stitched” we laid gauze down over it and sealed it with more tape. Then he made me a brace that would keep my hand from moving in a way to open it back up. I was done swimming for the weekend, but I could still catch fish! We went to the Doc-in-the-box when the weekend was over and he said it was fine, we took care of it properly but it should have had stitches. I still feel it every now and then when I over work myself, and the “dent” is still there in my tendon. That same wrist got dislocated in high school and I can to this day dislocate it whenever I want. It locks my 2 middle fingers down like when making a fist and I can’t move them till I get all my bones back where they belong. It’s really funny to show that to drunk people, you can clearly see the bones going where they don’t belong. Oh the war stories… lol.
There you go. To say I am super excited would be an understatement. And a great price too. About $60.00 more than just the locomotive order I cancelled. Really happy, of course I have to make sure it works? Hope so. I almost don't want to remove it. But I must. Need to read up in some of the history of this set. Was trying to explain it to my brother-in-law that is from Chicago, but don't know enough about it yet. I'll post it in another area so you folk's can help me with that? Bought an ex UP Ca3 (I think) caboose painted and lettered for the Montour RR. The Montour was on the receiving end of seven of these cars that were purchased by their parent company, the P&LE. Not much is available for the Montour in N scale but the good news is that the Montour did not have any variety in terms of locomotives, rolling stock and cabooses. Locomotives were a dozen SW9's, various 2 bay hoppers (rib side and offset side) and Ca3 cabooses pretty much sums it up.
I have the same set but non DCC… well factory non DCC, I put the decoder yours has in it shortly after I bought it. It’s a great runner and one of my favorites. I read up on it when I first got it, but I don’t remember much about it. CB&Q had a few Zephyr trains.
My replacement FP9A made it in along with a second I ordered. Slim pickings at this point for a recent release without having to pay a latecomers premium. Hopefully with it's popularity Rapido will do another run. I'd like to get a set in the CPR pac man livery. I'm really not even a fan of this body style but when something comes out that is exceptionally modeled then I tend to bite. Lighting features are top notch as well. Those are actual lenses for the class lights and rooftop mars light which illuminate on their own function buttons. The mars light is solid on from the factory though so I'll have to re-program that light so that it cycles more like a mars light should when on. The early CP units used icicle breakers but looking at recent vids of the real life units those have been removed and ditch lights installed with roof lights removed. So these are modeled after the early units that were delivered in the 1950s. I appreciate the attention to detail on these especially compared to the FP9s released by intermountain for the Canadian roads. There were several differences between the US and Canadian issues such as horns, fan units, antennas and center mounted tank to name a few albeit most likely to be unnoticed. Rapido was keen to model those distinctions though and even the underside detail was not looked over. The rear light operates and another first for me on an F unit. There is a parts bag that includes a bellows to go around the rear door along with sun shades for the side windows, eye brow grabs, extra traction rings and even a non traction axle to replace the traction one that come factory installed on the trucks. The installed traction axle gives this engine an impressive amount of pulling power especially for a four axle setup so likely I'll leave them in unless electrical pickup gets to be an issue.
A few Untrack pieces and accessories, two Atlas tank cars, a DCC-equipped Atlas B23 in SF Kodachrome, and a nice conversation at the LHS! And my son closed on a new house (his first) not far from there today!
I got another t-track module! I think I’m addicted to these things. Funny thing is I have a mess of them and only 2 are finished… both singles. Oh well. I got another Triple to play with. This one is going to be my Radiator Springs module. I need to finish building the buildings… I’m trying to 3D print them but I’m not good at making the models on the computer.
Hey, that sounds like me with my Unitrack sections! I have lots of the stuff from past layouts and new purchases, but I still needed two more 9.75" straight viaduct sections! I'm mocking up my next layout (a folded dogbone on HCD) with Unitrack Viaducts and piers for what will be ground level tracks on elevated terrain, to see how I like running & watching it before I commit to cutting, stacking and shaping foam terrain for it. Seeing just the ground level trackage, sidings, yard, etc. at table level (as opposed to directly overhead in XTrackCAD) so far is immensely helpful. Except for a short elevated run of bridges and curved viaduct (might eventually be a curved trestle), I'll strip the tracks from their viaducts and piers, and lay them on grades carved into foam terrain in the final layout. At least that's the plan, and as always, subject to change...
I added one of those visors to another order after reading about it. Got it this afternoon and so far I find it uncomfortable and awkward with my glasses on. My right retina is damaged so I do need them. Also the strap is not easy to get on. I went looking again for a clamp on with an arm. Found an interesting one at Wallyworld. I'll go see if they have it in store. Rich
