What does it have to do with model railroading? What does it have to do with model railroading? I'll tell you what it has to do with model railroading. Everything, did I say Everything? It has everything to do with model railroading. After all model railroading reflects all phases of life on or near the 1X1 foot scale railroads. Trucks, tractors, cars are all apart of our landscape, next to the rails. So it has everything to do with it.

It's been a good discussion and I don't mind it at all. Remember a thread goes where a thread goes. AND, as far as I'm concerned we are still on track. :p:eek::rolleyes::ROFLMAO:

You just won't find PC, Env.'s, GM's, and Puritan's on my layout. No electric cars or trucks, unless it's old antique cars or trolley lines. Reality is: Trolley lines had trouble finding enough electric power to run their trolleys. It was interesting times and fun to recreate. Coal was king and brought to our landscape an industrial surge, unlike anything seen before.

Oh, and give me a stick shift hopped up V8 any-old-time.;)

I'm tired of these whimpy bubble look alike cars. Gutless wonders!!:sneaky::cry::censored::censored:

    So, onward and forward. :D:D:D

When your knees start to go...you will be happy about having that automatic...JS :whistle:

I have a Buick Enclave now with a V6. We have a stoplight just at the edge of town. The lanes narrow to one lane just past the light going out of town. I beat most all those v8's to the merge lane. Gutless wonder ?? PFfffffffffffftttttttttttttttt !!:p:ROFLMAO:

I have one of those. And it really scoots! This is coming from someone who owned (real) muscle cars, and had a shop that built street rod/muscle car motors. (I also drag raced and raced powerboats.) I wanted something that was economical, and comfortable. When I test drove this little machine, I was shocked by how zippy it was. I race up mountain grades, passing everyone, effortlessly.

V-6s have improved loads over the past couple decades. The Ford F150 eco-boost trucks are v-6 with turbo and they compete quite well with their v-8 counterparts and exceed in many cases. Then there is the Nissan GTR and never forget the classic Buick Grand National.

I've got a manual, bone stock (except for aftermarket exhaust) 4 popper NA (1.2 liter) that beats the poop out of just about anything around where I live.

Mtn... we have a similar intersection and merge. Occasionally at the line for a red light a cage in the other lane revs to challenge, I respond then when the light goes green they blast off the line while I just casually putter out into the intersection... then after a few seconds after I hear them shift into second gear I twist the throttle and pass them like they are parked. And of course when I hit the speed limit of 60mph I steady her out (I might be cheating with this assertion a little lol) but by then the challenger is a speck in my rear view.

Ok, I was purposely being vague about the ride to mess with you folks but if one has a need for extreme speed this is a very economical way to get there.

I think a big part of model railroading is simply our memories of times gone by, whether we lived through them, or just read or heard about them.

Those memories drive preferences for our modeled railways and equipment rolling on them, while the scenes our trains roll through, at least in our imagination, also recall our trials and triumphs, rail-related or not.

When a train rolls by a field of hay on our layout, we remember what that hay meant to us, whether it fed a favorite horse, or we learned to drive an old truck or tractor, hauling the bails to the barn. Whether the bails, barn, truck or tractor is explicitly modeled in the scene or not, they are all crystal clear in the scene in our mind.

I have a horse ranch on my layout. I swear everytime the trains runs by it I can smell all the 'aroma' of a ranch/farm. ;)o_O

I'm driving a gutless wonder V6 as well. I meant what I said. Gutless Wonder. PFfffffffffffftttttttttttttttt!!! Right back at you.
The V8's today have been green downed until they too are "Gutless Wonders"!!! Bunch of DA's.

I keep wondering when it's going to get rolling. Should I get out and push it.

It don't matter about the knees. I'd be happy having it sit in my garage. Yep or Nope I'm not sure which. But do, give me a muscle car Pontiac, GTO, Dodge, Bumble Bee, anything with a Hemi in it.

I drove a Dodge Polara with a Hemi. The same as issued to the CHP. Now that was a nice car. Held the road, worked the curves and took me to accident scenes in a timely manner. Great car lousy job.

Well, I'm looking for some farm tractors for the layout. They don't have to run but just look pretty. Sigh!

    Talking about smell.

    You might appreciate this story.

I worked my mid teen years on a number of ranches and farms. Seasonal type work. Harvest is in you don't say wait. we will get to it in a week or so. You get to it NOW!

I was also building my first big HO train layout. One benefited the other.

I had several cattle cars made by Tyco. One of the guys that worked with me decided they needed realistic smell. On one of his visits to play trains He slipped in some cow dung. Cow power!!

My mother a fanatical housekeeper kept smelling the stuff but could figure out where it was coming from. I went back to my room and sure enough the smell was strongest there. Must be my work boots. They should be sitting outside on the stoop. I looked in my closet and sure enough the boots weren't there but out on the stoop. So, where's that coming from. Dirty clothes. Nope they were all out sitting in front of the washing machine. Wash day.

The next evening he stopped by and started laughing. He could smell his kind deed and said your cattle cars are about as realistic as anything I've seen. Note how he picked his words. I bent over as the local freight train passed by and sure enough they were as realistic as anything you could find. What the #ell, is that. How did that happen?? By now he can't contain his laughter and yes something like a belly laugh was emitting from him. I slid the door open and sure enough there's a wad of cow dung. Aiiyiiyii !! We almost said it in unison. "The smell of money."

Just glad i didn't have an outhouse on the layout.

You bunch of smart-ies. I really wanted to say something else but the PC crowd here might object. So, I'll submit and keep it clean, to a point. Sigh!

Track over tracks and crossing one over the other.

How dare you make fun of my layout. LOL:confused::eek::p:sick:

Examples: You want examples? I'll give you examples.

Colton, Ca with todays UP and BNSF. I'd rather say SP and ATSF but that would be old news. There is a flyover at the Colton Crossing and another in the Colton yard. Talk about over and under. They also have a balloon loop. No kidding!

Kansas City on the Kansas side. Go to Santa Fe junction, VRF via You Tube and you'll see plenty of examples of one track over the other. Go find it yourself. I'm tired of providing links. Takes to much time. Hawhawhaw Heeheehee

Cincinnati, Ohio They to have bridges and tracks going over and under. each other. No kidding.

Now go to Canada, through the Canadian Rockies, CP, CN and GT all had tracks through and over the same rivers and mountains. It could be quite the show, did you know? And, don't forget the tunnel that circles back over itself. VRF also has a place where you can see Canadian trains coming down off a mountain and dropping into a valley. Interesting to watch.

One more somewhere on the now UP Sunset Line. Where the old SP splits the main line and one track crossovers the other. Then there's the man made crossover near Victorville, Ca. Here the old ATSF built over it's own track and crosses over itself. Still that way today.

Don't forget Williams loop or the Tehachapi loop. Is that enough examples?

So don't tell me that doesn't happen. Phffffffttttttt!!

Now where have you guys been hiding out and spending all your time? LOL

Grant you my layout was built with space constraints in mind. I don't really like hiding my trains in a multiple level four track main... helixii !! I didn't want to run short $@!* trains and this is/still is/was the only way to get it done. What I don't have is room for a full sized yard. You'll have to see one of my dear friends, for that one. I think he modeled the old Barstow Yard. That is if he used the blue prints I sent him.

Although, exaggerated (that would be my layout) it's a hoot.

I built it for me and no one else. It only has to make me happy. At the moment it doesn't. Still thinking about that yard I'd like to have. Hummmm!!

    So there!!,:cautious::censored::LOL::ROFLMAO::confused::D:rolleyes:(y):cool:

    Is this fun or what?

I have a 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum, with the twin turbo V6. It is NOT slow! With all wheel drive, it won't spin the tires, but it will sure 'nuff set you back in your seat. Plus it has all the creature comforts.

But I drove my 2002 F250 SuperDuty CC shortbed w/7.3L turbodiesel (bought new) this morning on an errand. It was my daily driver to work until I retired in 2019. Sure, it doesn't have the creature comforts or speed the Explorer has, but it's like going for a drive with an old friend.

Several months back, during the thick of Covid, my wife suggested we go for a drive in the pickup!!! My jaw hit the floor... She normally hates riding in that truck!

My '89 Firebird Formula was a real mover and was a pleasure to drive and would go 150+MPH. They somehow were able to control emissions without all those power-killing appurtenances they added to most other cars.

Now, my '86 Cutlass Supreme which was a real pretty car, was a dog with one of the V6's in it.

I managed to stay clear of over and unders this time around and I later daylighted my short tunnel, the best thing I did.

Speaking of vehicles I started out on a Farmall tractor, then went to a 5 speed International farm truck. Next was a Biscayne Chevy and then a Chevy Nova SS 350. Right now driving a black van with a powerful V-6 that will blow the doors off most things on the road.
