Flipping them over is a great idea. Galvanized metal seems like the right building material for the window framework, not brick. It is coming along nicely. Lights will definitely enhance the finished product. I have added welding lights to the 2-stall Basher engine house module. There are some very tiny LED's available. Thanks for the update. Jim

You are absolutely correct, bricks do not belong there. They would never be layed back anyway, yes they could step back but it would not be done here, much too heavy a material to rest on a beam up there as well. You have a good eye and a good sense for structure.
I think the coolest thing about lighting this structure is how little would be required! A dim porch light by the office door and an absentmindedly left on light in another office would be so cool. No one works in a building like this at night!

Dang it, now you’ve put the idea in my head about lighting that office.:((n) That did not occur to me! Excellent idea. ;) And quite appreciative to get these tips from you and Jim while I’m in the stage of the build.

Now, a light over that side door was already spinning in my mind. Just figuring out how to pull it off. And yes some low lighting in the main warehouse would work very well. And who’s to say they (the crew) isn’t pulling a night shift? A few doors on this warehouse will be open so it’s got a look believable.

Well I think it’s safe to say I am putting the final wrapup on the Basher Sawtooth Warehouse build and review.

It’s been a little bit of a delay on getting to this final post due to the fact that some on this forum twisted my arm:(, some made threats:LOL:, and some even offered cash(you know who you are) if I would install lights on this project.

It took a month of rounding up the supplies and installing (I mean wrestling) the lights to get them in. The end results are posted in the pictures below for your visual enjoyment.

I will preface the pics and say that there are some small tweaks I still need to make. All of which will take place when this is finally installed on my layers out. I will also give my final assessment of this kit at the end of the pictures.

A nice evening pic as the crew wraps up their work, with the final box car sitting at the end of the dock awaiting pick up by the night shift yard workers.

I must admit this is a near picture perfect shot of the dock. For anyone in doubt, YES this is Z-scale and YES you can do this too.

Additional pics below. I did have one problem with the small light over the rear door of the warehouse. It twisted to the side on final installation and I was not willing to disassemble this building to get it more aligned. It is what it is. It’s called Z-scale.

Final pics with a little background detail. This certainly draws out the realism of this building.

My final assessment of this kit is that it is an excellent kit and would highlight any layout large or small. It’s a relatively simple kit to build although does take something fineses to hold all the panels together. I would say it is not for a first time novice to attempt and one should cut their teeth on some smaller kits first.

I think the one telling drawback with this kit is that the brickwork was done around the upper window panels. As noted in the build and review process, I’ve flipped the pieces so the brick would not show. It just did not look real. Also, step-by-step instructions would be helpful for some, but I only referred to the pictures of this building a few times. Otherwise intuition kicked in and it was not hard to build without step-by-step instructions.

As you can see I added many additional details to this building such as rain gutters and utilities / boxes. The office was some thing I felt the building needed as well. My opinion was there needed to be some location that orders could be taken in and paperwork processed, etc. Hence the reason for an attached office.

A critique of my own building technique, but the office probably should’ve faced away from the rail loading dock towards the truck doors. But you make some decisions and you have to live with them after the fact.

For those that suggested I light this building, I think it was an excellent idea. I was hesitant to do it at first because I just wanted to finish this building. The lights pretty much helped to knock this building out of the park.

Final comment - Mike Basher’s kits are top notch. The price and the quality or on the mark. I can’t wait to see what other buildings he has in the offering.

I hope this review has been beneficial to everyone especially the newcomers to Z-scale. My premise in doing these reviews is to inspire everyone to take their kits and layouts to the ultimate level of realism.

Nicely done, Lance. The lights add life to it. Adding the office is also a good idea. Jim

    Kurt,
Jim was the first person I believe that suggested I light this building, and he even offered large sums of cash as part of his enticement for me to do it :D. None of which has materialized yet by the way....:( So sound would certainly involve some sort of monetary gain for my troubles.:ROFLMAO:

Actually this was my first attempt at lighting, and it's not as easy as just poking an LED into the building and connecting a few wires. You have to plan out how the light will project into the interior and yet look realistic as well. Plus not having the source be seen.

What really kicked my backside though were the two exterior bent elbow porch/door lights and the two dock lights. I will share how I made those in another post. The effect was phenomenal, but getting there was painful and still not as good as I wanted. The one light over the side door twisted to the right as I was stuffing everything into the building and gluing it all down. It won't be noticeable on the layout, but it bugs a perfectionist like myself. The office porch light came out as desired though.

Thanks for the comments by all as well. Hoping everyone is drawing inspiration from the pics for their own buildings. Let's take Z-scale to the next level(y)

Matt, thanks and I am glad you liked the drain gutters/pipes. That was something that stood out on several photos I saw while doing the research for this project and knew they would be key to helping make this building look more realistic.

Scott, thanks and also on the lamps, I will explain how I did those in the other posting I started regarding the "Gooseneck Lights". As for what is next - I am going to turn my attention to the trackwork and elevation on my layout, and will send a few pics. I need to get some locos running and tested sooner than later. I may interupt that process over the winter with a building or two. Will certainly share any progress.

    Lance,

AB-SO-LUTE-LY stunning, very cool to see the results of your artistic skills coming together on an excellent kit!
Looking forward to your next endeavor and learning some of the arts-of-the-trade by watching your posts and responses here.

Per your suggestion, I did sign up as a monthly paying customer as a medium like this must be supported.

One (selfish) ask for you; I’ve applied the fine surface primer on my kit and am contemplating to use an airbrush versus paint brush.
Do you have any thoughts and/or recommendations?

    Tiest,
Well done on becoming a supporter of the forum. Now in regards to a selfish ask, there is no such thing on this forum. All questions are happily entertained and are never selfish. Never hesitate to ask.

Seeing as you’ve got the primer down, and it sounds like you have airbrushing capabilities, I would airbrush. Regular brushing is someone of a technique that one must practice with to get the brushstrokes right. That being said that also is true of airbrushing. I think a guy they can handle an airbrush, is more of a master of technique than a guy handling a regular brush.

And equitably please share your work with the forum. I’m very excited to see you when you and your son are going to turn out. Love the fact that it’s a father-son effort.
