That one will work, too. I'm kicking myself in the butt for not buying one of everything MTL produced. I missed the sawmill and the cannery, two superb kits. I did get two of the sawtooth buildings. One has been modified with open windows. Jim

    Lance,

Where did you purchase the FALLER Laser Kit glue from?

    EBAY - use this search:

    Faller 170494 Expert Laser Glue - Multi-Purpose - 7/8oz 25g

This glue has a certain tackiness about it that allows it to work very well on smaller parts, but your window of assembly is very quick to. Not much room for error. However with the needle type applicator you can get the glue right where you need it.

Z Scale Monster also carries it, listed under Zmodell products for some strange reason...

Just a note on that globe shaped needle applicator that FALLER uses, but it did not work well for me. I poured the glue into a better bottle with a more rigid and robust applicator needle.

Scroll back up and note the pic of the bottle I am using. Granted, could just be me, as maybe others are having better luck with that bottle.

Plus that needle I am using detaches and can be rinsed and cleaned, which you may need to do from time to time.

I’ve been rather busy on this sawtooth warehouse building as of late. Sharing some “teaser” pics of the track-side loading dock I mentioned, as well as an attached office.

    TRACKSIDE LOADING DOCK
I purchased the ORTUR 15W desktop laser cutter and have been experimenting with various buildings and projects. Granted this is novice stuff, and it does not compare to the types of cutters and lasers that Basher & Sons uses. However it is excellent for small things like cutting this loading dock. I’ve done the initial mock up in brown card stock and will do the final in laser board and then paint it. But the mock up gives me an idea how well it fits, and it also gives you an idea which direction I am taking this kit.

    ATTACHED OFFICE
The attached office is the office building that came with Micro Trains military office, warehouse, and gate kit. No longer in production sadly.

But this office is just what was needed, and with a little embellishing and detail, it fits perfectly against the warehouse as if it was built years later out of need for room. Seeing as my layout is intended to capture the early 1960s, this combination of buildings I think will be perfect. The office by the way takes on a hint of baby blue in the pics, but actually it’s more of a grayish color to the naked eye.

Anyway as stated these pics are just a taste of things to come. Stay tuned as none of this happens overnight. LOL

Oh and just a sidenote, but that loading dock will be covered as well. Also note the doors are going to have to be shortened from the original tall stance in order for this dock to work. But that’s all part of the fun.

Just sharing a few “continuation” pics of this rail loading dock that I have been working on, which by the way is taking on a life all of it’s own. The more I work on this dock, the more intriguing things get with this kit.

The pics of this “mocked-up” dock you are looking at, is probably the 10th reiteration I have done thus far. So there’s a little glue slop and inaccuracy here and there. And again this is only being done in thin card stock and not the final material.

I can tell you this from using my own desktop laser cutter and designing this dock, but there is good reason why one pays extra money for a quality laser cut kit. Because there is a boatload of hours invested in getting just to this point. Changes, adjustments, etc.

Since every building has a story, and just to set the scene for this dock, the concept is that the warehouse was built in the late 1930’s. The old wooden rail loading dock had seen its useful life and the platform and flooring were replaced with cinder blocks and concrete in the late 1950’s. The additional office building from the previous posting was added during this time as well.

Thanks Scott! This card stock I am working with is thin and flimsy so it’s hard to glue the pieces together. I guess as a perfectionist, even the minor issues in mock up drive me crazy.

This kit from Basher has so much that one can do with it. Based on its size and larger than normal footprint, I really think it’s going to be a mainstay in the yard on my way out.

There are some other minor changes I am doing to this kit as well, so stay tuned. Perfectionists need their time you know. LOL.

However I really hope some of the tips and tricks in building kits like this will inspire others to go to the RRAY level too.

Excellent work Lance and thanks for the kind words about our kits. I have had many "entry level" Z Scale and N Scale customers contact me and ask about detailing ideas as well as making personalized modifications to our kits and I have referred every one of them to the TrainBoard articles that are posted here. I also encourage all of them to become members, if for nothing else, just to see what can be done with a little patience and practice sprinkled with just a touch of imagination. I do apologize for Basher and Sons absence in the "new kit" arena, but summer and grandkids have consumed quite a large chunk of time. We will be offering our 2 Stall Engine House, which currently has a "brick" look to it, with a "vertical wood board" siding. The prototypes have been built and assembly went very well, however, there has NOT been time to fine tune the "photo model" and take the advertising photos and offer it for sale. The "wood sided" version came about through the request of a customer who is modeling in the 1880's and wanted the kit to look "older and wooden". We did it! It came out really nice. IF anyone is interested in buying one of them "sight unseen" please let me know at mikebasherenterprises@yahoo.com and I will provide cost and shipping information (at least until we get a website set up). Again, thanks for all of your past support and I look forward to working with all of you in the future!! Best regards,
    Mike Basher

Seems to be that postings on the forum are a bit slow right now, so I thought I had better liven things up with some build progress pics of the sawtooth warehouse.

The build on this kit is coming along quite well. Although with the additions I have put on, it has increased the complexity substantially.

Going back to the dock that is being attached, the pics below are of the final product, laser cut in laser board. As you can see from the previous pics I realigned the sectional lines on the platform to be a little more realistic. It has also been weathered in advance of assembly.

Here’s a few more pics for your viewing pleasure. As you can see the overall structure is coming along quite well with some roof panels installed.

The edge of the dock obviously needed a safety rail which was quite challenging to obtain. I tried to scratch build onne but that was a nightmare so I ended up using PLASTRUCT’s 1/200 scale railings. They’re a tad bit bigger than what I prefer but I was not willing to spend the additional time laboring on something smaller. They will suffice.

On that note, the stair steps on the dock are also from PLASTRUCT in 1/200 scale.

For those of you that have this kit, you will notice that the window frames appear to represent brick. I have personally never seen bricks mounted at an angle. It did not look realistic in my opinion. So I flipped them over and used the smooth side and painted them in a steel color.

You will note I also did not paint the window lattice. I probably could’ve taken a chance and sprayed them but I always have a fear of losing their thin detail. They will suffice in this manner and actually take on a weathered yellow look. DCEAD467-D8DC-4C52-BF53-D9178763C266.jpeg

Looking good, Lance. I like the added details. I like the contrast between the brickwork and doors and windows. Will it be lit? Jim

Jim, you just had to use the “L” word didn’t you??? And funny you should, because I have been mulling around the idea of lighting my entire display. So now would be the time to start when in its infancy. So I guess the answer is going to have to be YES just to make you happy.:D:D:D

Plus the room that my layout is in, has recessed ceiling lights on a dimmer. So the dramatic effects of lighting is easily achievable.

Although I keep teasing layout pics, once this particular building is done I am moving in that direction and will post pics accordingly.

    Lance,
Looking great! I think the railing worked out fine. The flipped and unpainted windows are a nice touch.

Thanks Scott. And since this is a build and review of the kit, my “review” of the kit is that the window frames just do not look realistic being in brick and mounted at about a 20° slant. Plus not having many pictures of a sawtooth warehouse, I went the route I thought looked more realistic.
