From June 1992 at Columbia, SC, NS power stands at the ready. The 7001 is a former SOU GP-40X, one of only three owned by the road.
Nice catch. I would have guessed former SOU had you not said it. I believe SOU was the only major road to continue ordering high nose into the 70's.

in the Fraser River canyon in British Columbia, the Canadian Pacific built first and got the best sides bridging back and forth to take advantage of the geography. When the Canadian National built through they were left with the crappy side so there are a lot of over and under bridges over the river. Here is the view from one bridge as the tracks cross over to the other side, looking down on the other line as it crosses over to the other.
Both railroads had it tough just to build through here. Hanging off the sides of cliffs or steep hillsides, blasting hard Rocky Mountain stone, summer and winter... hard work, and dangerous too, at the time. And right here the CP line comes out of a tunnel and straight onto a bridge. I've read that some modelers have been teased about doing that... well, here's the prototype!
A BNSF OCS train deadheads thru Minot as it heads west to Williston for big wigs the next day: An eastbound grain train rolls on the Northgate Branch through Coulee, ND under threatening skies.
The Milwaukee Road had one which was the same tunnel onto a bridge. A famous site, with many noted photos. And also a movie setting.
I'm familiar with this photo at Eagles Nest Tunnel, MT taken by Ed Lynch in Aug 1979. Just a fabulous shot.
.... and the Clinchfield's tunnel at Pool Point, KY. I once tried to capture a similar photo in CSX days some 20 years ago and found that this is a very difficult location to access, involving a challenging hike from the highway, a walk through the 640 FT tunnel and across the bridge, and a climb up the opposite hillside. I was with my family and decided it was better for me to return home safely than risk my life for a picture.
Any more diminutive, and it'd be light power. The Harvey-Voltaire local H72 barrels east at track speed on the CP Portal Sub, about MP 425/Balfour, ND.
Possibly the most famous is a 1950's Ron Nixon photo of the Olympian Hiawatha taken there, which was made into a postcard and sold in hobby shops. ("Vanishing Vistas?" I have one stashed in a box somewhere.) There is also another well known view by Sanford "Sandy" Goodrick (not Goodrich) of the Oly Hi in this same spot.
This one is easy to find. Search "Ron Nixon" and you wind up wondering why you get more pics of Ron Reagan than Dick Nixon.
GTW 4914 trailing third out on M338 at Manchester, IA June 30, 2021 Most people get drunk, others want sex but as for me, I go Railfanning.
Yeah, ALOT newer than that GT loco! Still owned by Grand Trunk Western? Looks like it's behind a BNSF loco? Now that I look ar it, looks like a CN loco.
I thought it looked like a model for a while... And yep, that's a CN GE loco. GTW was fully integrated into CN post-privatization after 1995, like DW&P. Shortly before a shopping spree that saw them double their mileage in ten years. And if the deal goes through, they will add KCS too (they apparently pulled the rug out from under CP's bid, and CP ain't happy!).
