Maybe his professor thought he was being satirical with using Savings and Moans since it was a crisis.
Reminds me of the joke about the guy using his neighbors WI-FI while the neighbor is not home and sends the neighbor a text message to apologize. Spell check changes WI-FI to Wife, the enraged neighbor heads next door and shoots the man for taking advantage of his Wife. When the neighbor returns to his house he finds another text message reading, "spell check is going to be the death of us all, it should have read WI-FI not wife".
I had to down size as well. So I am aware of what doesn't go. A lot going to caretaker organizations. Including modeling stuff. For those that will use it.
We are now living in a world of instant gratification which can mean only one...look, something shiny!
I'm reminded of the Peanuts cartoon --- which I wish I could find online (thus proving the original point!!!) -- in which Sally discusses misinformation about Abraham Lincoln to be included in her report. Sally asks, "Do you think I'll get an A?" to which Charlie Brown replies, "Do they give out Z's?"
And in a bit of irony here, my RMC accumulation also dated back to December 1970, until I picked up the 1969 and 1970 years to fill in some information in my Atlas First Generation compartment.
Yep. I filled my garage with surplus and had a garage sale. Probably sold less than 5% of the stuff. I estimated that based on the time I put in, I probably made about $5 an hour for all that work. None of the remainder left the garage other than being loaded onto a Salvation Army truck. Fortunately, they still take furniture. I don't believe that Goodwill does. My goal was to NOT have to pay for one of those Waste Management portable dumpsters. I did have to pay for a second garbage can for about four months. I literally had two cans stuffed each week and, for a while, at least another can or two's worth backed up. Downsizing is really hard work. I can't even remember what happened with the MR and RMC accumulation. I'm guessing they're in the landfill. The last layout was UniTrack, so that stayed with me!
One day the internet is going to go down for an extended amount of time and civilization will collapse. I'll be fine because I have physical books, music, movies and friends.
If civilization collapses, that which makes us human will be all but gone. Rebuilding it, we will re-experience all the barbarism of our history, all over again.
We actually have a library in our house. When it comes to books on railroads, almost NONE are online. Same for local history books.
Books, yes. I have a good collection of RR books, many long out of print and not even available for purchase. Old magazines, not so valuable.... Have we heard from anybody in this thread that has found somebody who wants their old model railroading magazines?
10 or so years ago I put an add on craigs list giving away my MR and RMC mags . a youngster with his father cam by and took them all out of my basement . worked out well ! .....Mike
I would find reading MR books or magazines a blessing. I would look like Mr Magoo with the reading glasses I would need however. That being said...sitting in front of a computer screen all day has taken its toll on my eyes. Maybe curling up with a good book or magazine is just whats needed. I would take any surplus items off of anyones hands. THE Wife might not be happy but.............................................................shhhhhh !!! .
I would take them...I've actually paid postage in the past to have them sent to me, but now I have most of the ones that I need. Some of the best articles are the ones not published anymore. Prototype Modeler, Model Railroading, RailModel Journal, Railroad Modeler, Mainline Modeler. Of course, several of those are available online - Thanks Trainlife!
All of the magazines and other reading material were removed from the waiting rooms I've been in... because COVID... An aside: How many of you remember reading Boys' Life (the Boy Scout Magazine) in barber shops? Toward the back there would be something about model trains... usually a "spaghetti bowl" track plan if I recall correctly. I found one online (really!) and downloaded it just "for the Lulz" as some would say today. I don't think there was room for a telephone pole...
Oh, and I thought that Model Railroader / Trains had taken their magazine search engine off line (and it looks like they have), but I found another (or maybe just their database relocated): http://www.olimpia.com:8084/SearchPage.html
