Moose discovered that what was originally thought to just be a disconnected draw-bar when first purchased, turned out to be a broken tender pin. As you can see, the DCC & speaker wire crowd the area where the draw-bar connects to the tender. Has anyone else experienced similar issues with broken pins and trying to reconnect the draw-bar amongst all the wiring? First photo shows where the pin broke off at the base, and the second photo shows the draw-bar. All those wires! Moose will try to glue the pin back in place, using Tamiya modeling glue, if can just get around the wires ... Not sure if the mass of wires will disallow the draw-bar properly connecting. Another "some day" repair project... Groan...
Is that the Vandy tender? If so, here is what it might look like w/o all the wires: I'd consider drilling a hole thru the tender floor from below, and inserting a screw from below to make a new drawbar post.
Yes Dave, beyond all those wires is a vandy tender. Good suggestion; Moose'll consider it. Will likely have to remove the wiring to do a proper repair, one way or another, might as well install something that cannot break.
Hate to ask this, but where does one normally go to find such wee screws, and what brand, size, etc.?
I would do a google search for miniature hardware or the like. I had one site bookmarked but it has changed into something else. Or, if you happen to have an actual hobby shop nearby... How about Micro Train screws? Doug
Since it is a vandy tender, I would just get rid of it by sending it to me (I'll somehow handle the pain) and replace the entire tender with something more...rectangular. How do I model the SP without a easy source of vandy tenders?
I bought some metric wafer head phillips screws from this outfit to replace the driver/rod screws on a couple Bachmann 4-6-0s (the factory hex heads were too much of a pain to work with): https://www.metricscrews.us/ . I think the same outfit has another site for non-metric sized screws... but I don't have it marked. I was also going to suggest that Microtrains coupler mounting screws might also work, tho' they are a touch thin.
I have had the same problem. A MT coupler screw with a thin piece of styrene at the top, just under the head will replace that pin.
Screws & styrene ordered. Chose the MT 00-90 screws as extras may come in handy for other projects and, well, goes with the MT tap set in da Moose toolbox... Now to wait 'til they get here...
Funny, I had just the opposite happen on a Con-Cor Hudson. The pin is on the locomotive and there's an oblong loop on the tender. The front of the loop broke away. I epoxied it back on. Doug
Had to do that with one of my MP Mike's. I don't remember what size screw, just tiny! I tapped the hole I drilled and ran it in then dropped a tiny bit of ACC to lock it in. Now, if Moose steadies his nerves and hooves, he can do it! But, we have to see pictures!
Thank you for the vote of confidence, good sir! And Moose will endeavour to post photos as per moose rules.
