Alright, looks like the boo boo is fixed and they are ready to test fit tomorrow in the spot they belong. That second one wore me out and I am too tired to try it tonight. I'm taking a break for the day. Might run some trains on the OLD layout, or just chill? I probably should have edited in ShotCut Video Editor, but me was too tired! I will probably add some type of molding or something on the shelves to keep stuff from falling off in the future. Also , thinking about drilling a hole for me coffee cups ( they are all the same size ), but kinda freaked out the shelf may not hold it. I'll test it and pray it doesn't fall. But first with JUST water, just incase I have to break out the carpet cleaner! I don't trust my work much, do I?
Thanks that second one was a bear for some reason. And I thought I would knock it out after building the first one? Plans never work out the way you think. Also, rethinking a solid top piece again for each one. One to help align it and keep it from racking, which I think I have fixed already. And the other is if I go to cut say a river or stream that I will get too close to the bottom of the foamboard, and any water product I use or bridge abutment, or something that needs to be lower would be an epic fail? Gonna test fit today, Sunday, and just see how it goes. Was gonna paint, but gonna wait on that too for now! Lay down my track, and see what needs adjustment, try out a few different things, and see how it goes. Keep reminding myself, go SLOW, don't rush it like I usually do, yeah right! But I am excited to try it out.
Why not try assembling the frame on top of a foam panel to make them square. I keep my carpet cleaner close at hand for the same reason.
Like what you have done so far. We've all had days like that. Since I tore up my quad tendon, I found I get frustrated or tired more often than I used to so I have learned that slow can be a good thing sometimes. Thank you for taking the time to share so much of the build with us. It's fun to follow along.
Great suggestion, just too late. I fixed it anyway. I've got some 1x2 pieces I think I can use as sort of molding and also it would help strengthen the shelves. I am learning as I go. Along with if I can cut a hole for the base of the coffee cups to sit in at least a bit. As you can see from my avatar and the saying in my signature. I am addicted to Coffee Also, noticed today the the door I use for benchwork is not exactly level, oh well. Done now, or the hard part is I hope?
Alright update #3 and it is in place so I can see how it works for me, and any adjustments that need to be made. Man this thing looks huge compared to my OLD 1' x 2' bases for the layout. Overtime it should just look normal to me! And the L won't be up all the time. Or will it Chores today, gonna try to hook some basic track up tonight and see how the trains run. Also, need some molding or whatever you want to call it around the shelves to keep things from falling off and strength. Might try to cut some pieces to test tonight. Sorry, for repeating myself a lot in the video!
A lot of leveling which I did not think about ahead of time. Gonna look for some leveling feet maybe. Also, have to wait till I decide how to put the foamboard attaching to the wood base. It will make a difference also. The sound the foam is making running the test train is strange as I have always had corkboard under it Have to decide on that too. But the MAIN thing and most important of all.. the COFFEE Cup works Still freaks me out, till I get the molding up or drill a hole, or both! Sad isn't it when your coffee is most important. I'll have to try and make a coffeeville town or something. I am so glad I added the shelves they are awesome! Now, tiny things don't have to go on the layout, like Coffee, Flashlight, DCC Controller in better spot, Rerailer, etc... Really like having all that stuff at my finger tips ready to use.
Coffeeville, java creek, Cupajoe diner, the Bean, ....etc!!! Grind up some more! Nice progress so far!
I have to make something that represents coffee for sure at some point. I like your suggestions so far Right now I am just leveling things up, and changing track up to see what I might like in an actual track plan. Plan on kind of taking a break and just playing with it for now, and plan my next steps. Actually I'll probably start working on my new Walthers Modern Gas Station kit soon. But who knows for sure.
Hazelnut K-Cups is my favorite flavor. I'll figure something out for sure. And I want to get the general aviation landing strip on it somewhere. So much to think about. Just trying out different configurations. Gonna make it flat though. I don't need extra problems. But it was cool to try. I kind of dig the extra track though. Just not on the piers. Too many problems, but it looks cool After deciding on a plan I want ( or at least close ), gonna take it back down to the garage to put some molding on the shelves, possibly get a 2' x 4' sheet for each base ( incase I dig too deep in the foam putting in streams and lakes ), try to figure out the dang DCC wiring, ( shouldn't need much since they are so small ), etc... Think I am gonna paint it black as I kind of want instant roads and parking lots, etc... Might try the chalk board stuff that T.H.E.R.R. used. but might just be regular black paint. Like I said, trying my best to go slow, and think about stuff! Man thing is having fun again with the trains. It's been awhile! And BTW, I suck at trying to figure out where building, scenery and such should go! I just can't picture it in my head, never have been able too! Oh well, as long as I learn! Probably need to do a diorama to practice?
Practice diorama's are a great way to practice scenery techniques. And when they turn out ugly or too big/small, no loss!

Was a beautiful day today and decided I needed some quality outdoor time after this last winter. So I decided to buy a can of spray paint. I don't want to deal with the mess of a brush and such. Also needed it for my plastic 3D printed buildings and it worked really well on them. Planning on painting the wood frame for the base of the layout and test it on one of the 2 x 2 pieces of foam to see if there is an issue. Going with Black cause I want instant roads to try and figure out how to lay them out. I hope my idea works. This is what I bought, says wood, plastic, etc... It even states Craft Foam, whatever that is? So foamboard should be alright I expect? The Black can on the right, other two are for the house I am paining along with the black.
Alright trying out the levelers and painting the foam Black and the shelf Tan to see how it will turn out. I think I need to cut my feet block of wood down a bit in testing it. Like maybe a 1/4" to 1/2". Got lucky after testing and found the exact drill bit needed for the piece of plastic the feet screw into. Hopefully an Update #4 video in the near future. Gotta say I have never taken this much time on my small layout. I sure hope it ends up being worth while in the end I've also never spent this much money to try and do it properly, so there is that too C&L Layout ( Cheap Layout, yeah right! ) Still freaked out about the simple wiring and will be asking many questions and hopefully not destroy much or anything. Please don't fry a locomotive, or a controller! Is there such thing as a Model Railroad prayer?
Well, it's going slow that's for sure. I know have the legs with levelers on one of the bases. Turns out not everything is level, work benches, garage floors, even brand new table you buy, So hoping these will help so I won't have to put shims under each end of the layout to level it. At least I hope! I'll try to show the completed base before it is closed in where you can't see the leveler legs, if that's a thing?
Well my brother sold his country house on 11 acres and he had this for 10+ years, my old door layout that never really got going to any depth. I though he had thrown it away. I figured no room for it, but what the heck. Might just set it up in the garage one day for the heck of it. Or maybe not? Worse case everything gets scrapped off and it becomes a new work bench for large projects. Told you I suck at scenery It's the BC&L I guess. Before Cheap Layout Once again none of this hobby is cheap! I might practice some scenery on it. This was my poor attempt 10+ years ago, and I had less motivation and money at that time. Just noticed, at least I gave the Cork roadbed a shot
Man, when I say going slow on this version. I meant it. Only been like 2 month's since I have worked on anything! And I have another to finish painting the wood base part!
