In the voice of Vinny Barbarino....

    "What?"

    "Where?"

    "Why?"

    (When push comes to shove...)

    "I'm soooo confused"

Checked out the paint on the GHQ models before heading to the office this morning. Base coat is good. Noticed the roof had come off one of the bull dozers. Easy enough to fix. Now to do some details paint. I stand by my comment that the only thing super glue is guaranteed to stick together is fingers, otherwise, it's hit or miss.

Okay, now on to a tangent.

Last night, I saw that a particular manufacturer was listing something I was thinking of getting as now in stock. Kool, right!?!? Maybe not, I don't know yet. Anyway, I started counting up my spare MRR budget money and realized I'd probably be able to get the items. We all know nothing is cheap anymore but these are about the equivalent price of a couple of decent freight cars so not terrible expensive either. I then started poking around my favorite TrainBoard advertisers e-tailer web sites with nothing found so moved on to some additional e-tailers and my not so LHS web site. Then I realized something was off and started over though the same path again. I know I have bought items put out by this manufacturer from several of these sites in the past and what I was finding was that this manufacturer was not listed at any of these e-tailers any longer. Continued to search outside my normal sources and no luck, just more of the same not listed. Then I went to the manufacturers web site and it is available there and listed in stock. Hmmmm. So, I started checking out their list of places it is available and that list was surprisingly few and mostly don't have a big on line presence. So, while finding nothing else, I am left with the impression that this manufacturer wants to be the main on line source for their product. Makes me wonder what the rest of the story is here since they are a growing manufacturer with good products. I like supporting TrainBoard advertising e-tailers and the few other on line shops I buy from since there is no "close" LHS to support. So now I have to decide if I want to buy them straight from the manufacturer or not. (End of my tangent. Hopefully I have kept this generic enough but if a moderator feels it's not appropriate, please remove the post)

Following your GHQ builds and they look great. I have a JD combine I have been putting off for a while and after seeing how well yours turned out I think I'm closer to giving it a try.

Thanks. They have been much easier to build than I expected. Will be cool to see how the combine turns out. I have been thinking of getting that kit to make flat car loads with that represent one being shipped.

Yeah, my wife actually bought it for me. Her family farms and they are Jonn Deere through and through, infact I even had to take an oath of allegiance to John Deere before I was allowed to become a member of the family:LOL:.

Well, you know what they say, nothing runs like a Deere :D

I have a few John Deere tractors on the layout (you can see one here hiding under the bridge) put a couple of the flats loaded with John Deere tractors that Athearn put out several years back.

The GHQ JD Combine is one of the more difficult GHQ kits to build, and I've pretty much built them all.
I was able to get Jen-U-Wine John Deere green and yellow paint for it.
If you would like I can try and get a picture to post.

When I build GHQ I use both ACC and 5 minute epoxy depending on the application.

Typically I use a thick ACC or Gap Filling and apply accelerator to one side of the joint.

A photo would be great! I thought if the build didn't go well then I could just weather it, put it next to the barn in what ever condition it was in and put lot's of weeds around it to cover up my mistakes. I see a lot of outdated farm equipment just setting out in the barnyards rusting away. Either way, it's a win-win. But I am anxious to see yours.
    Thanks, Ralph

Speaking of farm equipment, that must have been some fancy planting to end those rows right up next to the RR tracks! ;)

    And where's the scarecrow?

Would be cool to see a pic for sure.

For the most part, I've had good luck with the duper glues (regular and gel)

A small amount of progress from the weekend. Finished up some paint on the GHQ models. Tires, grills, and blade edges.

    20210306_132450.jpg

I added some vent decals along the bottom of the silos. the silos themselves are basically done and ready to be mounted. Any additional detail is stuff that will have to go on after they are in place. The building along the roof of the silos is the next big task and that is where all the roof detail will end up being.

    20210307_120809.jpg

Work on the main building is nearing completion as well. I applied the truck unload shed, the pipes for it, and the sign above it. Next up are an outrigger over a big access door and the rest of the decals.

    20210307_125840.jpg

With the main building and silos about ready to mount in place on the layout, some site prep is in order as well. I had originally planned the building layout differently and at that time, I made some base ground cover using a buff color. I had also done it in separate applications that resulted in some unwanted ridges in it. I wet those ridges several times Saturday and was finally able to remove them.

    20210307_111516a.jpg

Next up, I made sure I had enough glue and light grey ballast on had to redo the entire area in one pour. Once this is dry, I should have a much better base for the whole complex.

    20210307_114226.jpg

Once all that is dry and I can clean up any excess there, I can drill holes and run wire for possible lighting of the buildings. Then the buildings will be ready to be set in place.

I had an idea about how I was going to do the building along the top of the silos but after looking at "a lot" of big grain facilities on line over the weekend, I am back to the drawing board. Still moving forward but still taking baby steps.

Thanks and why yes, it sure is. It's one of two that I have. That one will record from VHS to DVD. Mom had probably 50+ VHS tapes of stuff she had shot with a VHS camcorder and I have almost finished copying it all to DVD to preserve it. I also have over 100+ hours of trains that I shot on VHS that I converted to DVD years ago but keep this thing around in case I ever need to recopy something again.

The other one is just a player and I use it as my main DVD player in the train room.
