Can anyone identify this decoder?

Hi,

I’m new here and looking to pick someone’s brain. Picked up this loco on Craigslist and can’t get it running.

Not sure what type of decoder this is, can you help?

Do you have access to JMRI and DecoderPro? That will be the most definitive way to tell. You can add a roster entry and hit 'read type from decoder' on the screen and it should run through the list. CV7 and 8 are manufacturer info as well. You can read those individual CVs back on your throttle.

Does the speaker enclosure say ESU on it? Could this be a Loksound decoder? It looks like an older model, just based on the size of the components. It is difficult to identify decoders based on sight just because there are so many different sizes and configurations in one series. Are there any serial numbers or codes printed on it?

 

What DCC system are you using?
As stated above read CV07 and CV08 then look them up on the NMRA Decoder ID chart.

 

if you can move the wires a little and find the number on the speaker, it would give you something to look up if it originally shipped with the decoder .... or numbers on the decoder that don't show in the photo

 

Looks a lot like an ESU LokSound Select. BUT that capacitor sure looks to be a Digatrax one.

Yes, it is an ESU speaker. So must be an ESU I guess.

Now... anyone know how to reset it off the top of their heads?

Set CV 8 to zero will restore factory settings

 

Well if your DCC system is a NCE Power Cab do this. Hit the prog/escape button 4 times (it’s the button on the lower left of your throttle) the display should read program track, hit enter- display should now read PROG TRK- 1=STD 2=CV. 3=REG— HIT NUMBER 1 -STD IF you are able to read, a number should come up. If it’s 151 is is an ESU decoder.
If an another number comes up, let me know and I can tell you who made the decoder.

 

All right, we have some action!

Manufacturer = 129 and the headlight blinked.

Anyone have an idea what it is and how to reset it?

129 should be a digitrax ..

 

Got er going! Its a Digitrax, Reset CV = 8 and all better. Back to 3 and re-addressed.
