Go to eBay and find an MRC Tech 2, 3, or 4. They are plentiful and cheap, being the demand is for DCC these days.

What type of train are you operating? I am not familiar with a straight DC power pack that would do what you want. Sounds like a DCC or radio control upgrade project.
Oh, wait, just re read your post..... you have a Bachman starter set. Unless there is a set like that with radio control out of the box, again, I don’t think what you want is available. I will watch with open mind though to see what others say.

I have converted several of my locos to Gscale Graphics radio control systems. I’m pretty sure I could isolate the smoke function, but have never done so. ( I’m not a big user of the smoke generator in my g scale locos)

Well, first just let me say that I don’t know it all....far from it. Only basing my response on personal experience. Most large scale operations that I have been around use either basic track power dc, or radio control battery powered locomotives. I use both. Yes, there are other alternatives, ie, dcc as you mentioned, and other control systems. Hopefully others will chime in with info. Until then, here is a good read I found on power and control of large scale locomotives.

    hope that helps a bit.
