    Hi Rick
I for one have enjoyed reading every word that you have written on TrainBoard, well all the ones I've seen, and I thank you for that, and the pictures. They are worth 1000 words each!

I'm also watching how you get around little little/big problems as I have to get started reconstructing an unfinished layout too!

Thanks and all the best wishes for the future!

    Jim

Yikes. Looking at that wiring, you've got a HUGE task ahead to get everything repaired.:eek::eek:

    Glad you like it. LOL

At least I'm not one of the pun-dits on the media these days. They believe their own lies. Aiiyiiyii !!

What you see in the photos, what you referred to as extension cords, is correct. However, these are drop cords with 12 gauge wire. Capable of handling anything we throw at it in Model Railroading. I can hook them up to my table saw, chops saw, reciprocating saw and any-other power tool I have and they deliver the amperage needed.

    Thanks for the comeback.

You are so right. I get to be the Maintainer that puts them back together. A lot of sit on my A$$ and soldered Western Union Connections. I did plan ahead here, knowing I might be moving it. The wire is color coded. That is if I can see the small bands of yellow on blue, red on yellow and so on. The 14 gauge wire is solid color and it too is color coded for the same reason. I have a schematic of the wiring and what goes where in case my brain cells quit firing properly. It will be the telephone wire for the switches that will throw me. If that's a pun it was intended. ;)

I use solid wire. Braided wire is something I used early on and there is to many whiskers that can short out connections. So in comes the solid wire to replace it. Easier to solder besides.

Once up on a time I wanted to be a stand up comedian. I actually worked on using puns in my one liners. What the heck, why not, so you get to benefit for them. :D:LOL:

Extension cord vs drop cord …… is this one of those turnout vs switch things?!?! :D:p:ROFLMAO::LOL::barefoot::coffee:

LOL BNSF not you too. You would ask.

George has fun with me on this track issue. Okay, you know this is coming and you asked for it. Ordinarily I would try to convince you the T word is wrong and let you decide. Not this time.

I do have the tendency to split hairs but we need to recognize certain issues from a perspective of a Rail. When it comes to electrical conductivity we need to recognize the purpose of various gauge wires, from the perspective of an electrician. Knowing what size of wires are better for conducting certain levels of amperage. We deal with this daily on our model railroads.

We've gotten into the habit of the, "I call it syndrome." I would hate to think Science would change everything on a whim of, "We want to re-name it." Sigh!

Extenstion Cord versus Drop cord. No they aren't the same. Walk into a hardware store and ask for an extension cord and they will hand you an 18 gauge or smaller wired cord with minimal insulation. Ask them for a drop cord and they will hand you something heavily insulated with a 12 gauge or larger wire.

Recognized by most electricians (not morticians) an extension cord is 18 gauge wire which is relatively small with limited amperage allowed through it, for purposes of lighting a lamp or powering up minimal wattage speakers and etc.. The key here is it pulls down very little amperage. Drop cords certainly extend your range but are 12 gauge or bigger for the purpose of powering up the power tools I mentioned. You don't want to pull down so much amperage/current through an 18 gauge extension cord and it heats up and catches fire.

The codes for electricians recognizes a difference between an extension cord and a drop cord.

Now about those things that model railroaders tend to call Turnouts. Wrong, just wrong.

Here on American Railroads, they are switches, they've always been switches and will always be switches. In the tradition of the Rails. I said not laughing!

I never once, not once... heard my family of Rails refer to the model railroader's Turnouts, as such. They called them Switches. When I asked them about the T's, they said the Foamers/Railfans, Model Railroaders, you do...as in you call them that... but we don't. Just so you understand or know, I don't use the T word when operating my railroad. :cautious::mad:

This all started back in the late 30's by a fellow from Europe who wrote an article for one of the first model railroad wig wags. Describing a switch. He used Turnout and we've been stuck with it ever since. Now you have the rest of the story.

I don't care what you call your tomatoes or potatoes. I prefer to eat mine.:D

Neighbor woke me up. Slamming doors. I live in a duplex which is one apartment over the other. Now awake, I turned on the morning news, started the washing machine and fed my feline buddies.

Looks like there's been a possible set back with a vaccine for the Chinese Disease. Or the pun-dits are trying to make someone look bad. I know from my experience in both world's (mortician and AAD for two hospitals) it typically takes 12 to 14 months to perfect a vaccine and get it out on the market. We are still on target. There's so much data that needs to be collected and tests that need to be run before FDA can approve it. Safety First.

Today: Looking forward to reinforcing the second section of the layout. Then get the legs on it and flip it over so I can start major repairs. Time to get out the work trains, heavy duty equipment and welded rail (flex track). Then the maintainers (me) can move in to reconnect the circuits.

Can't find my favorite pictures of the work train. More to come.

These trains are actually wreck trains. The big hook's or wreckers were also called hookers. These trains responded to wrecks.

    Later.

I switched to turnouts before I turned out my first layout, but then I switched back when it turned out I should not have switched at all.

Funny Massey, funny. Guessing you've been working on that one for awhile.

It's all about fun so feel free to keep it coming. Love it!!:):D

Although I do get serious about some things.

No, it actually just popped into my head as I was reading about extension cords...

Au contraire my friend. You know how I love to disagree. Go to Ace Hardware and ask for a 50 foot 'extension cord' and they will lead you right to....

12/3....14/3....16/3. They will all handle any DYI applications in our home environments. BUT...they are all 'Extension Cords'....(y)

    TURNOUTS...:p:p:p

Not to mention...you cut the end off an extension cord and wired the 'stranded wire' to a 'recepticle' inside a 'metal box' ??:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

With friends like this who needs enemies.:)

Yes, it will be great to have my layout back-up and on it's own feet. I'm tired of carrying it around.

Solid Wire George, and it's a 12 gauge solid wire. Done under the direction of an Electrician. See!! I can use a drop cord as long as I can unplug it from a household receptacle. And you can see the plug in the picture.

Keep it coming George.:p:eek: LMAO

By the way have you moved to Winnemucca, NV yet? I might want to drop in on you. I've been wanting to see your layout up close and not so personal.

Almost like a chat room. But I like this better.
