What is the deal with BNSF 923023? Does anybody have any history on that car? It is surprising that a car like that lasted to have BNSF patches applied. 'Rail Train Buffer' sounds like they were used with welded rail trains. A Railpictures photo description says it was built in 1923. That could be an interesting modeling project too. Anybody know the reefer class?

Another mid'70s shot here, but i don't know where I took it. Could be Crystal Lake, IL, definitely within one of the commuter districts with those yellow platform lines.

Former GN caboose somewhere in IL (if that's MP 79 displayed on the concrete post, it's Greenwood, IL on the Q main) in about 1976.

I was driving along side of Texas Highway 36 a week or so ago and wondered why there were no trains on the BNSF. Then I found this.

I am always amazed at how small the wheels and flanges are on those things!

I saw the springs, but never made the mental connection to a bank of brush holders. Thanks for the challenge.

Although long unmanned, the RDG's Hope Tower still stood watch at Hopewell, NJ in July 1976. It's long gone today and the line is single track.

Now if they could paint some heritage units in the colors of those fallen flags... A big SD70ACe in Chinese Red would be quite nice!

How can BNSF be 25 years old?! CSX is 40, NS is 38 ..... even CR was 44 years ago and ATK 49. Holy smokes.

    Tom,
Very nice catch! What was leading that DEVPVO with the trailing 25th Anniversary unit?

I have been reprocessing my old photos from the early 2000s....

    "The Depths of South Draw"
On an overcast afternoon and from atop Tunnel 14, a westbound UP coal empty threads South Draw and nears 1,730 ft long Tunnel 17, the longest tunnel on the east slope other than the Moffat Tunnel itself. Decades ago, a short spur called Quartz was once located just ahead of the location of the head end of the consist.

Just think, if Penn Central had survived, they could celebrate their 52nd anniversary!

And there I was, just driving down the highway minding my own business, when I encountered a train going the other way. Fortunately it was on the rails and not on the highway. :p
