How do the MT metal wheelset compare with Fox Valley ?I've been subbing ESM for wheels but they are expensive. I think its $1.25 per wheel, I'm always looking for a cheaper but quality way.

I've been very happy with the M/T metal wheels so far. I have only used them in M/T trucks and have equipped a couple dozen cars. I do wish they would do a 36' wheelset as well.

I've only started doing metal wheels this year doing 3 cars at a time. After I install the new wheel sets, I usually put the cars on the layout and run them for a couple of hours minimum. To date, zero issues or failures. As for cost, a pack of 12 axles is about $10 from my current pusher ..... ummm …. I mean e-tailer.

I've been fitting my intermountain rolling stock with their 33" wheel sets and find they work just fine in the micro trains trucks. I think the axle width is about .020" wider than the version they make for micro-trains but they still roll very smooth without any extra friction. In fact there is still some slack when they are installed. So... intermountain makes 36" (60051 or 60071) wheels and that may be a solution for you.

Yay! That's a really nice car. If you enjoy the TC and haven't seen this book, it's well done and worth having.

Got a couple of things in. First I'll talk about this Athearn 2 bay hopper... the best detailed version of this type hopper I've ever seen. There are even wire grabs modeled for the trough hatches. I'll be paying close attention to their stuff from now on.

Then I got the first of 3 Rapido Dash 8-40CMs I have had on order. This is a very nice engine with precision low speed operations out of the box, good sound and nicely detailed. The only two issues I have with it which are very minor is the ditch lights are not as bright as I'd like and there is a tiny bit of light leakage between the cab nose portion of the shell where it meets the deck. With DCC one can control light boards, ditch lights head lights and tail light individually.

Two of the drivers have rubber traction rings so this thing will pull extremely well. They even though to include extra traction o-rings in the jewel case with the instructions so kudos to Rapido for thinking of that.

I've yet to use their 36" axles. I've been using the 33" versions or 60070 and would guess the flange and tread profiles would be similar.

I pulled out my calipers and this is what I measured:

    Tread width: .062"
    Flange depth: .020"
Min Track width (outside flange to outside flange): .35"

If I misunderstood or you need another measurement let me know.

Flange height. I have some really small girder rail I want to use and its picky on big flanges and wide wheels...

Ok, that flange depth above should be what you are looking for. (Flange diameter - wheel diameter)/2.
