D&RGW did something similar, BNSF FAN. In the mid-80s, they stopped using old WWII troop cars for MOW service and went to this modular concept you posted. I'm sure there's more creature comforts in these than the old steel cars!

Very interesting indeed. I think it's interesting how NS wants to keep using them, but railroads in really remote regions, such as class 1s in ND, MT, WY, SD and other remote states can get by with hotels.

Wouldn't want to be trackside when this train would roll by at 50mph, can you imagine a loose piece of scrap flying off!!
This goes back a few years! I remember seeing these in my youth. The operator would often be standing up to observe his work in progress.
Cool! Oil-filled high voltage circuit breakers. The oil inside quenches the arc that is produced when the breaker opens. That box on one of the breaker chambers is the control cabinet. That's where the magic happens to open the breaker when there's a fault (short circuit).
