Hi TrainBoard members! I am a model train newbie trying to get started in the hobby! I am located in the Charlotte region and in my late 20s which based on youtube videos it seems I am on the younger side of this hobby What can I say, I love trains too! Planning to start with N scale (limited by space) and something around a 3' x 5' layout. I have been doing quite a bit of reading online of old forum posts and watching youtube videos. There sure is a lot to this hobby! Lately have been trying to decide on what I should choose for my first locomotive. I really want to do an F series loco. Hoping to do a "Southern Railway" in the 50s theme as that is relevant to my location. After this coronavirus business is over I am planning a trip to the transportation museum in Spencer to try and see if they have a Southern F unit! Also thinking I will go with Kato Unitrack as that seems like the easiest option for an N scale newbie with limited time. Thanks for hosting such a great forum with lots of answers! I will try to keep searching before I post!
Welcome to Trainboard. I do know they have an E unit at Spencer. You can look at it from this angle and pretend.
Great shot! Didn't know about E units, I just did some reading to learn up on the differences. Such a lovely loco!
If you want a summary of Southern Railway diesel locomotives in N Scale, this summary from Trovestar might be of interest. Trovestar is a great site for all sorts of searches and product reviews. You can search on anything you like and the N Scale database has now surpassed 70,000 items! https://trovestar.com/generic/index...ry=Locomotives&Model+Type=Diesel&Collection=4
Welcome Wall E! I Lived in Winston-Salem for four months some years back and drove by Charlotte a number of times. I visited the Spencer Shops at one point during my stay. A very interesting place. The tour train I rode was pulled by a high nose GP30. Gotta love it. Good luck on the layout.
