One might suspect that the original plan was to produce just the Pullman Metra cars.
However, Kato had previously made the C&NW E8 loco and the additional effort/expense to tool the earlier C&NW versions of the bi-level cars was likely not that significant.

Yep.... very surprised and equally unimpressed. I did not purchase the previously offered C&NW trains from Kato and will not likely get these either. This is another 'SNUB' to eastern US railroads and the NCL fans. Perhaps they are getting closer to doing an NCL... at least they are using up 'some' green paint on the C&NW models.

I think you are correct. They're already coming out with the Pullman Standard coach and cab cars in Metra scheme the same month. Likely just the coach/buffet as added tooling. Will likely be a good money maker for Kato without absorbing much design and tooling cost. That should be good for all of us, regardless of interest in C&NW. I'll probably buy one. I'm guessing that they will eventually release the cars as actual C&NW commuter equipment as well.

I'm disappointed to see one of the few trains that Kato could make that is a hard NO for me. I am not sure why, but I'm just not a C&NW fan.

C&NW was the railroad I grew up near, and I've never really been a fan. Comparing our avatars, it looks like we've selected a more interesting RR to follow.

The Flambeau 400 came through our little town in north central Wisconsin. The C&NW was our ticket to the the outside world as well as the opportunity to watch freight operations. A steam switcher was assigned to the local yard and during the potato harvest some larger road steamers were brought out to handle the extra traffic. I was afflicted by the train bug at a very young age. So, why is the Santa Fe my favorite railroad? I guess it would have to be because of the 027 Marx passenger train my brothers had.

Sort of the same feeling I have toward the C&NW... but I have no reason to dislike that railroad.
In a way... I am limiting the number of connecting routes I would buy as well... since my original focus was routes which connect with D&RGW and has mysteriously expanded in every direction.

I think I know why Kato has announced the C&NW passenger set this month.

I just noticed the logo for this year's N Scale Enthusiast convention which is being held in Kato USA's 'backyard' of Chicago IL. The logo depicts a C&NW 400 E8 diesel prominantly dashing through a Chicago skyline. The convention will be held the last weekend of June 2019 (June 26 - 30).

I would imagine that Kato began planning this release once the convention site was confirmed a couple of years ago.

So I guess we need an NSC convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul MN, Helena MT, Boise ID or Olympia WA before Kato will announce an NP North Coast Limited.

So where are the next couple of NSC conventions going to be held????

NSE convention locations typically follow a west-east-central rotation scheme.

2019 is in a central US site, so a western locale would be up next.
NSE tends to revisit the mothership in Medford OR about once every ten years, so that might be due for next year.
Then back to the eastern US for 2021, central US in 2022, and so on.

NSE hasn't yet been to Seattle.
Could Kato have an NP North Coast Limited ready to go by 2023?

I think last year 2018 was a western convention in Salt Lake Ciry. This year 2019 is a central convention at Chicago. So that means the 2020 convention should be an eastern city... maybe New York... which could be the long awaited 20th Century Ltd. Hopefully the 2021 will be in Seattle and an NCL could be released then.

You are correct sir. We will be announcing the East Coast location at the convention in a week. Normally we would announce it farther ahead, but we have had trouble of late finding convention friendly hotels that will offer the services and space we need at a rate our attendees can afford. Wierd that it has gotten so expensive of late, but apparently hoteling is a good business right now.

So, the west-east-central location rotation scheme is no longer in effect?

Would an east coast site be significantly less expensive if you chose a convention date before Memorial Day or after Labor Day?

If you ran Kato USA, and Japan let you do what you wanted and you are a CNW fan... oh yeah! :)

The C&NW disappeared along with the SP and D&RGW in the “Great Sting”, the single most amazing film-flam since the Erie Railroad bond scheme. Who would have thought the D&RG running out of money to build to Creede would be the event that started the demise of these three railroads... :)

The rotation got altered based on our desire to not be in the same neighborhood as the NMRA convention for those that do both, in particular our manufacturers and modular folk. And the weekend we have was chosen as it is between school sessions. That seems to be changing, so it may not be as problematic in the future. We are looking at dates at our steering committee meeting this year. That said, there doesn't seem to be any savings in any time of the year right now for the hotels with ballroom and display space enough to have sizable layouts. So the search continues.

George, there's always Las Vegas, but there aren't too many home layouts to tour or prototype facilities to tour

    But plenty of hotel/convention halls

I'm kind of hoping one of these conventions ends up in Atlanta at some point. It's southeast but still east and easy to get to.

We actually tried to get Atlanta for 2020, but were not able to come to an arrangement with a hotel that was able to accommodate us. We will continue to do so, as Atlanta is on our list.
