I need help. I'm trying to find a picture on line that would help me paint my Shapeways staircase but no luck. I don't know were to start.
Don't know what you have in mind, but here's an idea. Though the open verticals would require matching the background.
… dark/black rubberized (texturized) treads (metallic bullnose) with light colored risers. Railings might have been wood in that era. Walls of staircase a contrast of risers OR a pattern seen elsewhere in the alley as long as it doesn't overpower.
Freaks, are like I would have suggested except only the tread would have a rubberized coating with the faces the same color as the rest. With lite colored reflective stripes along the the top forward edge. I do agree all wood would have been the probable material back then but, they may have a modern safety upgrade. This High School probably had all wood when new.
I suppose it depends on the time frame. Some nice reference photos provided, but as we probably all know these things have changed over the years with different materials and safety regulations. Given what I've seen of your layout to date, I'd say some kind of finished wood (as in stained/waxed) would be most appropriate.
The school stairs are close. I'm afraid that Shapeways has made a modern stairway that wouldn't be found in 1962. But If I make the entire staircase WOOD then some …..Wait. One step at a time.
Now, wait a minute here. I was pretty young, but I remember 1962. It may have been a long time ago, but it wasn't prehistoric times. Seems to me I remember light brown or tan linoleum as a common stair tread covering. I think the only thing on your stairway that might or might not have been there is the center railing. I don't recall those as being common, although your state may have had different regulations than Michigan.
Most older schools that I've been in have concrete stairs, not wood Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
I agree. Most schools and smaller business had sold concrete. There could be space beneath. The steel was mostly used in manufacturing buildings were they would have to survive oil spills.
Everything on that model staircase would have been in existence in 1962. As others have said, 1962 was not prehistoric. The architecture then was very modern. Steel and concrete were very common. Aluminum, too. The question would be whether or not the staircase in your building was added then or is from an earlier time as the building, itself, is obviously much older than from the 1960's. It's more 1940's style or even earlier. Another consideration is whether or not there would have been a double staircase in that size or kind of building. Heck my junior high school. built in the late 1950's, would not look out of place even these days. Doug
I'm going to start painting and see how it goes. That school stairway looks as close as I have seen yet.
