I was given some used Atlas N Scale turnouts with switch machines attached. How do I wire these?

Each machine has a black, red and green wire. I figure that AC is required, but I don't know which color wire is the common. I figured my best option was to ask y'all rather than burn out machines seeking a solution. Thank you!

    Black - Common
    Red - Diverting route
    Green - Straight route

The controller then just connects either the red or green momentarily to throw the switch. They will work with either AC or DC, as long as the voltage is high enough.

Ah ha! Thanks y'all. Before I asked my question, I pulled one turnout from the pile and tested it assuming the black wire was the Common. When it didn't work, I stopped and posted my query. After reading your replies confirming black was correct for Common, I tried another turnout and it worked fine as did the others.

Doesn't it figure that I first chose the only defective turnout of the half-dozen I have in hand?
