Greetings, I have always admired the creativity and skill that make up the model railroad hobby, but never got in to it because I built model cars for years and then got in to RC cars. I stopped building model cars around late 2011 and focused on RC since then, but I found it to be expensive and time consuming. So what did I do? I decided to get in to trains because I wanted something even more expensive and time consuming! There is a joke that RC will make you a millionaire..... if you are a billionaire! I decided on N scale because of space restrictions. I knew I might have more cost and sometimes fewer choices, but I plan on sticking with the scale. At this point I have a few locos, a DCC controller (vintage Prodigy), a few buildings and a lot of EZ track. I wish I hadn't bought so much of that because I know now that I'm never going to use it when I do a layout. Where I'm at now is looking in to layouts and practicing things like painting, weathering and soldering (never really been very good at that). I'm in no hurry to do anything and I know I want my first set up to be a yard.
Hi TrainPoor, Welcome. Glad to have you on board. Happy that you have some track, a locomotive, and a controller. That way when you become tired of thinking and planning, you can set up a loop on the dining room table and run while clearing your head. Running a train is wonderfully therapeutic.
Oh, I've had various setups on the dining room table for about two months now. Trouble is, I have to put it all away when done as even I know it can't stay there.
Hi TrainPoor and welcome to Trainboard. There is a similar saying in model railroading that is mostly applied to the manufacturers and retailers. How do you make a small fortune in the model railroad hobby ? ... Start with a large fortune.
