I've come into a Con-Cor S-2 4-8-4, made in China in 2001. From what I read on Spookshow, this model was a close copy of Kato's model from 1985, but with some modifications. The locomotive doesn't hint at wanting to run, but the headlight illuminates.

Can anyone help me with instructions on removing the cab and boiler shell so that I can perhaps troubleshoot it? I can't figure it out how to get it apart. Thanks y'all!

I use a small screwdriver to pry the sides of the fire box away from the chassis. There is a little retaining bump on the side of the chassis that corresponds to a detente on the shell. The shell then lifts up. At the fire box end it is mostly friction I think.

It's pretty. Please let us know if you get it running and what was wrong.

Oh, that brings back some memories. I had one of those that I sold many years ago. I kind of miss it.

I think Con-Cor put the same or similar China-built chassis under an SP Daylight body. I've since read that this locomotive will probably not operate on my weenie 11" Radius curves.

It's a Concor model that is 'based' on the 1985 Kato engine. It came with the regular boiler and in a Daylight streamlined version (my favorite road was the Pennsy streamlined engine :ROFLMAO::LOL::ROFLMAO:).

Well, I successfully removed the boiler. The good news is that the motor is fine. The tender wheels have some sort of caked up dirt on them which I cleaned as best I could. It now runs, but operation is far from smooth and it'll still stall and need a nudge.

No matter, as this locomotive can't operate on my curves anyway. If I were to post it here for sale, I wonder if anyone would want it and at what price?

Model trains can be weird sometimes. I put my 4-8-4 away last night, somewhat disappointed with my work. This morning I took it out of the box and put it on my test track and it ran much better. Go figure.

Maybe the lubricant got a chance to soak in?

That's probably a good guess. I'm glad to see it running.
