No trains this week. We've been on the road attendinga national bowling tournament, but on the way home took a side trip to Mount Rushmore and Deadwood, SD. Managed to leave Deadwood $200 ahead.
Quite well. They put down one heck of an oil pattern. At first I was having trouble but went to another ball and kicked a**. Some of the big guns with their high averages were not doing good at all. We should be in the money.
I had thought about adding a bowling alley, but don't have enough room. Started that layout over 30 years ago and have used up every reasonable space for structures.
I suspect you just gave Candy an idea for another one of her masterpieces. And a setting for another great people scene outside the building.
Don't need a lot of room, when I was a kid there was a bar down the street that had 4 alleys in it, my brother used to set pins there. I just bowled in the Cleveland City Tournament and Seniors, only bowled well in the Doubles competition and just bowled my average in the Seniors, so will probably not cash, although I won some brackets. Rick - bowling you average in a tournament isn't bad. We attend numerous tournaments across the state of Montana and many of the houses are quite small. One had 4 lanes, but it is not uncommon for some houses having just 8 lanes. We have been bowling with the same couple on our Friday night league for 22 years and we have a lot of fun visiting smaller towns for tournaments. It can be quite interesting trying to adjust to the different oil patterns on lanes that you have never bowled on. Our next national is in Reno, at the national Bowling Stadium 80 lanes. Besides bowling, we like to take a short side trip to Virginia City and ride on the Virginia & Truckee.
We mostly only have the mega centers with 50 lanes or more, most of the smaller houses have closed. We bowled the city tournament at the house where I normally bowl but of course the pattern was nothing like the house shot we normally bowl on, but it was a fair pattern with an out of bounds to the right, but I was having a problem with the 4 and 7 pin where if I shot them my normal way it would not get through the oil to make the pin and when I adjusted it hooked into the gutter. The Senior tournament was tough in that the oil was quite light and the ball was flying even in practice, my problem was all the splits I left when I let up on the speed even a little bit. The USBC Director in charge of the city tournament bowls in my Friday Nite league ( I am the secy-treas of the league), and he would not even let me know the pattern he chose. I was elected a director in the new combined USBC for Cuyahoga County, all men, women and youth are now under one umbrella. Rick Jesionowski
With Montana being a sparsely populated state, there are not any mega centers. Our local house is only 18 lanes, but extremely well kept. Towns and cities are also fairly far apart so a state tourney can have you traveling a couple of hundred miles. The largest house in the state is only 36 lanes. It has taken some doing as the USBC usually wants to have a state tournament to be split between two different houses and in many cases, this is not possible out here.
My Father, being a teenager in the early fifties, was a "pin setter"(before it was automated you had to do it by hand!!) at a bowling alley in Snohomish, Wa where the bowling alley was on the second floor of a mercantile in town.
