Such nice stuff BNSF FAN! Seeing the N&W power made me recall a bunch of Kodachrome shots that I took in Bluefield, WV around this time that were lost in processing. The roll went missing at Kodak (or was it Kodalux then) and was never found. Years ago a friend sent a number of his vintage SAL negatives to a processor to have enlargements made. They too disappeared. The gal behind the photo counter asked, "Can you shoot them again?" No, not hardly.
Thank you and I feel for your loss of that roll of Kodachome. I had a roll lost as well. Don't know that it had anything unusual at the time but it would all be vintage now. And you just have to love a clueless clerk at a photo counter.
Yup. Kodak lost a 36 exposure roll of K64 I had taken. These were done during the final two weeks of common carrier operation, and not sent in until post-embargo. Which meant when the guy asked, I told him in no uncertain terms re-taking was impossible. When he went home that night, his ears were well burned! This is just one reason for their demise as a photo resource. I have heard too many similar tales of such horrors. Incompetence...! They deserved to have the failure we now know. It was well earned!!!
I agree Ken. Those units definitely had a presence of power about them. I remember shooting a lot of them back then since they were never common visitors to the area. Funny thing is I know I saw more Conrail in Chattanooga than I did N&W.
Back in the early 80's, the N&W SD45's used to get pooled up here to Seattle on the UP alot, those looked even more cooler, like a hammerhead!!
Sometime in the early '80s, I think it was Trains Magazine wrote a small news story about a railfan at one of Kodak's processing labs that was removing customer rail sides, copying them and properly placing them back for shipment to customers. It worked for a while, but the guy's greed got out of hand. Railfans were receiving train slides ..... but not shots they recognized! After an investigation, the guy was turned out and fired. I've always wondered where the boxes I lost over the years ended up .....
3961 is a GE U-Boat. Their noses, both high and low, were shorter than the EMDs from the same time period.
Nice! I always liked SOU's U23Bs, looking both compact and powerful. I'd forgotten that SOU placed air horns at each end of some of its units like they did with these.
Southern SD45 3121 at Chattanooga TN. Probably still my favorite series of units in Southern paint. Southern 3192 at Chattanooga TN
And this is the last one until I can get a better scanner and find the time at some point in the future to scan more pics. This one is from early 1982 and was on the first roll of film I shot with my first 35mm camera. It was a Cannon AE1 that served me well until I went digital 20+ years later.
