While I was in 5th, 6th and 7th grades, my family lived in New Hampshire. A Boston & Maine branch line ran right across the highway from our home. Every few days an old Alco would haul a few cars, sometimes only one and a caboose over to Wilton and exchange them for a few to return. So, here is to the memories.

I tried to photograph my train painting experiment but I was only marginally successful. I have to work on lightening the ties a bit. I'm showing unpainted track on the right so you can compare.
Nice, Russell. This dredges up a similar memory I have of a ragged C&O GP7 leading one 40 foot boxcar and an ex Pere Marquette caboose on the Port Huron sub back in the 70's. Different railroad, same memory. Thanks for posting.
Candy, so far, so good. Just thinking of the previously posted prototype photo, you might try a wash of dust or mud on the rails. As for the ties, how light would depend on how old they are. Fairly new ties would still be a dark creosote color with some dust or mud, but older ones would be more gray. (hopefully, I'm not playing Captain Obvious here)
I was thinking that a team yard would be pretty old even in the 1950s. So I thought I'd lighten the ties a bit. I just want to get the tie color more even.
I too enjoy my Alcos and have several for the 70's era of my layout. Here a C628 and C630 are crossing one of SP's segmented concrete deck bridges that are common on this line as it crosses the Humboldt River several times.
Actually this is not even close to being a bad attempt. I saw many, many ties of age, in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State, which the grain edges had a "silvery" effect. Sun, wind, rain, snow, heat, cold. All did a number on even the best of treated wood.
An LV freight slows for Ash Gap Viaduct on my freelance N Scale road. The C-420 is an old MRC/Model Power unit I made into a dummy and painted. The GP-38-2s are old Kato units that I also painted.
Since we're talking about ALCOs, here's my PA-1s in D&RW Aspen Leaf scheme pulling the California Zephyr on a previous layout, over a decade ago.
Here in New England we have the White Mountains. Looks like you have the Pink and Blue Mountains Just kidding Looking good !!!

Yard ties would also be partially, if not totally buried in dirt, oil, and lots of other "stuff". Check out the near tracks.
I see what you mean. But at a team track the locomotives would not be over the space I'm modeling. Well maybe just a little. So it wouldn't have all that oil....would it?
