Bachmann's is poor quality and a fairly rare prototype. Never have cared much for EMC cars... they just don't look good to me.

    Dear Atlas,

How about a DD-35 or DD-40 that says Atlas on the box?

    Sincerely,

    Me

I like that Rich Folks & Pedigrees car. I have seen more gas/electric or diesel/electric cars with that round roof than with the flatter round roof that the
    B-mann uses.

I suppose that you could but two of the passenger ends of the B-mann together to get something that looks like a Reading Company coach. I did make a trailer coach for this when B-mann first issued it by doing just that, but I cut it to fit the old Arnold, later MP, corrugated shorty coach chassis. Some Rocket Scientist mishandled it at an N-Trak display, dropped it and it broke in half, I never got around to putting it back together mostly because I was moving shortly after the guy dropped it.

The RF&P car also has a RPO section that the B-mann lacks. Funny, there is an old static model out there of an N scale doodlebug that has an RPO section, as well. It will fit onto the first generation B-mann doodlebug chassis.

More than a few modellers have made a doodlebug from the Lima/MP Penn PBM-70. The results have varied. Almost all of those bashes that I have seen retained the clerestory roof of the original model. I bought one cheap at a show a while back. The guy did a really good job on altering the roof at the mail end to accommodate a radiator, but his power was an old Atlas/Kato RS-3/11 power chassis from which he had removed one truck. For the back truck, he retained the six wheel truck of the original, as well. He mounted the power chassis to the shell in such a way that the thing looked as if it were on stilts. He simply added a nut, bolt and spacer to the back to level off the thing. That A/K chassis is finicky enough in the contact department as it is; it was worse when it was missing one live truck. I bought a live Kato passenger truck for the back and replaced the A/K chassis with an old plastic frame LL FA-2 chassis from which I removed one truck (the wires to the motor had come unsoldered anyhow, to the pivotting trucks and the flexing wires). It ran well for some time until the a wire on the front came unsoldered. I have yet to fix that one, as well.

Many people have complained about the quality of the B-mann over the years, but I never have had too much trouble with any of mine. The worst that happened was when I fried the decoders on two of them after a few hours of DC running, In the end, that turned out to be a blessing, since I had to wire around the fried decoders if I wanted to keep operating them. It turned out that they run much better on DC without the decoders. The slow speed control is amazing on them.

I recall reading that there was no known operating prototype for the B-mann car but that it was taken from a design offered in a St. Louis Car Company catalogue but no railroad ever ordered one. There is a You Tube video of one in Australia that looks much like it, but even there, some small differences exist.

Still, I like that RF&P car and would buy at least one.

That would be excellent. I remember the rumours of Athearn producing a DD40AX, then Bachmann reacting and updating the tooling of their old model. Would be nice to get an SP DD35B as well.

As always, Wolf is spot on. How many times do we have to beg for Baldwins before somebody listens?

These phantasy trips are always amusing.... (y)
I'd be sure Atlas is just happy with their return to profitability with new generation 'repaints' in the real world...
    But don't worry, China's continuing downtown in economic terms (explosive debt) and the Idiot-in-Chiefs continual attacks on 'imported goods' ((Hey Atlas- stop making your product over there));
they'll soon be setting up a new US manufacturing plant somewhere out on the plains... :ROFLMAO:

I would buy Baldwin road switchers. Between the B&O and WM, they had many of the models that were available.

I would buy FM yard goats, as well.

If any of the above SP boys model the SF Peninsula, Santa Cruz or Monterey, they would like those, as well,

The dummy B unit does not roll very well, either. In fact, it creates drag on the powered locomotive which reduces its pulling power. I have never seen the plastic chassis version that Spookshow cites in his review. I wonder if that one rolls better. I will have to look around at a show to see if someone has one so that I can try it.

I did not know that SP had FMs in Arizona.

When I was riding the School Bus on Rails on the SF Peninsula, Santa Clara and College Park yards were still active. The SF Peninsula had many FM yard goats, and, of course, the Trainmasters. You did see the occasional Electro-Motive yard goat, as well, and, sometimes an RSD-5 at Santa Clara. I do not recall seeing any ALCo yard goats up there. I did see PAs on the Daylight, Lark and Coast Mail, but, once the PAs were gone, it was E-units. There were also torpedo boat GP-9s, GP-9s with both dB and SG and, of course, the "Cadillacs"--SD-7s and -9s, but you saw those more on the weekends when the Trainmasters went to work the freights between Oakland and Sparks, Nevada.

It is funny, most roads that had FMs did not like them, but SP seemed to like its, considering all of the use that it got out of them.
