I found this fine old photo of a Chehalis depot on the Internet at [ https://sherrlock.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/centralia-depot-thenmr1.jpg ]. Is the current structure at all related to the one in this photo?
Dang Kurt, that MILW ribside boxcar you found is a beaut and your captures are perfect. The next time I visit family in the Midwest, I want to pick up one of the Fox Valley N Scale models of these as a souvenir.
Kurt: Great photo's as usual. This car is from the 22188-23187 series built in 1945. It has the Murphy Type 2 welded roof, steel running board before being removed, 6' Youngstown side door, 4/4 Improved Dreadnaught end, and square lumbar end door. It was originally lettered "The Milwaukee Road, Route of the Hiawath's". Thanks for the pics. Tom
Centralia depot is still there today, now a great museum!! Served by the NP, GN, and UP pooled trains, but 2 blocks west was the Milwaukee's very small depot.
This was really a yard office in Chehalis. The former Milwaukee Depot in Chehalis was located kitty corner from the original location of this structure across the street from what is now National Frozen Foods. The Bay has been added by the CCRR since moved to its current location. In the pic below, in the lower right corner is the The Puget Sound and Willapa Harbor Railway and its Depot which became the Milwaukee Road's on it's Branch to Raymond & South Bend, WA. This depot was gone sometime prior to the 1970's. The Milwaukee Yard office in Kurt's photo would have been built later on, located to the left of this depot by a few hundred feet and across a road. You'll note the former NP/BN/BNSF depot at top left. The building at very lower center where National Frozen Foods is now was a Heidelberg Beer warehouse.
Yeah, I have a ground level shot of it but not here at the office. Whoops, I lied. I did have this one.
Excellent finds Bryan!! I've been looking for pics of this area, I go down there frequently to check things out, (while the Mrs. goes shopping at the outlet malls!), and roam around trying to find all the old stuff!!
That's the area my family is from and where I lived for over 20 years, if you have any questions or specific interests, let me know. One of those Milwaukee Rib Side boxcars belongs to my Uncle Harold. Harold_Borovec_Photo_1 by wazzou posted Nov 14, 2007 at 2:26 PM
