I just popped back today and saw the word logging. Good for you. Logging is an awesome subject to model. One of the first kits I built into a locomotive was one of randgust's. You won't be disappointed if you ever decide to go that route. The lack of Atlas Shays isn't particularly helpful. I didn't ever get the Shays I reserved years back. I think Atlas just let the run go.
My new Shay arrived a few minutes ago. It's beautiful. Just wish I could afford to buy the other three they have. Many thanks to John Zerbe for telling me where I could buy one.
Now to order another logging loco from randgust . I had one of his kits, but lost it in a move. Am going to order one of his kits.

Have been looking at the hollow core door p0ssibility. They're not cheap, am ,looking at $35.00 Now. Did find some on Craigslist. Between 5 and 10 bucks however. Long drive to get one so will probably just buy a new one. The 2" Styrofoam. Has more than doubled though. I can probably buy a sheet of plywood or abs and some 1x4s and build my own frame and top for around the same price. Not sure what to do yet.
I might have misunderstood something but if you have room for something 6 wide by 25 long, why settle for a HCD layout? Like the others, would really like to see some pics of what you are doing too, especially the logging cars you cast.
3she just informed me that I have to get a permit, several inspections and final approval. I am not a fan of big cities. I also got worried about spending the money on a new shed and the expenses. But now it doesn't matter, there will be no layout I was just informed on Friday.
Just remembered reading about guys with 24x48 inch layouts in the layout design forum so went looking. Couldn't believe it but found a plan. Interesting run. May try it out before I pack all my stuff up.
Well, at least I'm about to the running trains part. Won't be a logging RR, but I can run my Shay and a few cars.
woo woo woo?!! Just make the benchwork modular so it can be moved and there shouldn't be ANY permits or inspections. As for a shed, buy premade from local big box store. They are not permanent and therefore don't require permits either (and if you move, just take the whole shed/layout with you).
