The Bayshore Roundhouse was built around 1912. It serviced steam and diesel until it closed in 1982. It was part of the SP Bayshore Yard, which was located on the soutern border of San Francisco. Now... all that remains is the gutted brick structure. In 2001 a fire destroyed half of the 16 stalls the roundhouse had. There is talk of restoring it and making it a railroad museum. Photos taken August 2007.

I went out and took these photos at the end of August. Who knows if this roundhouse will survive. There is a great railfan friend of mine who is working tirelessly to have it preserved and restored as a railroad museum. There is a lot of rail history in the surrounding area.

I can think of a roundhouse, albeit smaller, which was saved and restored. It was in bad shape. So, this project isn't impossible. I hope your friend succeeds!
