Hey, it's just a model and a little money and time. Fearless is the way to approach this stuff. Especially Atlas models since new parts if you mess up are cheap and easy to obtain.
FYI, if you want to try you start with a high hood SD7 or 9 depending on the road number. You need one "spare" part in the form of a late model flat roof cab to extract the new cab face and number board / headlight enclosure. The rest is jut chop, saw, glue and file. Patience is the key as much as skill. Good tools help too.

oh yeah, I should comment looking at the pic I posted which looks odd. This is fairly heavily weathered which accounts for what may look like irregularities in the paint. Not so much. It is all intentional.

Excellent work! I'm doing them (SD10s) in HO scale right now. I'm planning on doing some in N scale as well one day.
