Santa Fe Train 191 (or possibly 200, it's opposite counterpart), at Pueblo Union Depot sometime during the 1960s (Al Chione)

Interesting the train numbers are 191 and 200. I am used to (example) such as 191/192. Why the skip in numbers? What was their system?

PS- Love that view of M-190!!!

Their numbers over part of the run were 201/190. That's kind of important to answer your question.

The Santa Fe ran odd number trains west and south. The Denver trains connected with the Chief, 19 and 20. If they had just done the typical connecting train thing of 119/120, they'd have cobbled the whole system up, confused the employees, and maybe caused wrecks by running an odd number east and an even number west over part of their run.

Between La Junta and Pueblo, the track was considered east and west. The track shared with the Rio Grande north of there was north and south. Making matters more complicated, the train didn't haul sleepers from the east, but from L.A. So, cars from 20 went to Pueblo in 201, and north on 200. And returned on 191 and 190 to connect with 19.

Sounds like it would have been easier to declare the La Junta-Pueblo segment to be a north/south line, but it wouldn't have been. They interchanged a lot of freight to and from points east with the Rio Grande at Pueblo.

And that's M-160 running the Carlsbad train, the sleeker, non-articulated, six cylinder Brill car.

That seems to be the case, yes. Even little incidents like that seemed to command quite the attention from yard crews.

Yup, and that's an SD7. I suspected something when I saw the position of the class lights and looked it up.

And it looks like it's messed up a set of points in the process, just to add insult to injury...:D

Those yard shots have a rugged, tough, hard-working look. The dirt, dust, grime, grease and oil stains make the place and the engines look like they're being worked hard

    Love it.:)
