My diesel fleet operates in the late 70's but I wanted to add an excursion train to add interest. Due to the lack of good steamers that represent the ATSF in N scale, I decided to just go with a steam loco I liked and make up my own consist. Does not represent any specific ATSF train that ever existed except in my dreams (I still morn the loss of the Santa Fe). I am still undecided on what cars to add. I have a lot of low level Santa Fe corrugated streamline cars including a bullet tail as well as several business cars.. That is one option. I really would prefer a nice multi color set like the SP Daylight.....very sexy. However, I want the cars to say Santa Fe. I have seen other ATSF smooth side cars (Blue Goose, Scout, Valley Flyer) that have paint but not bright like the SP daylight. I may decide to add some paint scheme to the streamlined cars I have to create a bright consist even though it only exists in my dreams. This is what the Santa Fe would have created if they still existed.
If not already in your car fleet would suggest the Bachmann 85 foot dome. for at least two cars. http://www.spookshow.net/passenger/bachdome.html

Also, just ordered a Model Power/MRC 4-4-0 SP! Heard good things about the loco and its even SP, my first steam engine and I am very excited can't wait till it arrives! Even scored 2 PFE and 1 SP early model box cars for it to pull. It will be the switcher when I score an AC-8. Possibly make a small 2 module set to go on my Cuesta Grade modular layout that depicts the Tunnel 10 collapse and repair. Would also make a great small solo single 'industry' layout. Just the one steam engine bringing lumber to the work site from a siding just down the line from the tunnel. It has dropped in price significantly some places. I got it dirt cheap brand new, less than half the original retail. If you wanted a great running 4-4-0 check your shops for the 'wow really? Well all right then' pricing some are running.
Ken...you are on a buying spree again. Were you able to test a MP 4-4-0? I have been curious about them.
I find that there are fewer choices right now for transition era modelers. There are some sales for older close outs items available... but it seems many of the transition era folks are waiting for the next BIG NEW release. Meanwhile... Micro-trains gets most of my money. I have not seen one run, Spookshow says nice things about it. The 4-4-0 has shipped, hopefully the mailman is kind to her, I will post a video of it for sure if she arrives safely.
Recieved a whole load of stuff today! All from TB members, Leester and Hemi. A fleet of 26 Wisconsin Central 50' boxcars. And a set of WC locomotives, a GP35 and GP40. Also recieved a custom painted/detailed set of Burlington Northern SD40-2 and a Rio Grande Challenger. Not sure what I'm gonna do! But, I'll figure something out!
I finally broke down and bought a little Alco S4 in Western Maryland's speed lettering off ebay; the price is right and I have heard only good things about these little engines! Eager to get it! No matter what I try, I just keep coming back to my beloved Wild Mary I guess...!
Dave, Since you asked, a matched pair of chopped Kato snoot SD40-2s. Fully superdetailed with cut levers, MU hoses and cables, freestanding grabs, beacons, etc, etc.
Sold a bunch of trains to save up for a new camera body, a used Canon 7D Mk II. It's quite similar to this one, and same vendor. https://www.mpb.com/en-us/used-equi...gital-slr-cameras/canon-eos-7d-ii/sku-771822/ Just waiting on it to arrive in the mail.
Ordered a KATO FEF3 from Kobo Shops with Lok Sound. Hope it was a good choice. Saved a ton over sending one in for custom install. We shall see.
Cannot go wrong with Kato locomotives, they run exceptionally well. Just wish they used a pin plug for decoders but that is no concern for you since it will be factory installed.
The Model Power SP 4-4-0 arrived today. So far it seems really nice. Love how it looks and the sound options are great, I was able to match the chuff and whistle to 4-4-0's on youtube. It runs... really good on the good trackwork, and shows me exactly were the bad trackwork is. It only has 2 driving wheels and that makes any little dip and uneven section show as a pause or hesitation. Not the locos fault, I just need to get the MOW crews out and improve it.
