What do you store your trains in?

Looking to revamp my storage system and better organize my N scale freight cars and locomotives. Looking for any recommendations that others might have. I'm currently storing them in their boxes within plastic containers bought from lowes (maybe 30 or so stored in each container).

I was thinking something like this but also on a budget, what do you use or recommend?

    Thanks in advance!

Steve, that looks like a blue print cabinet.

Years ago I had been considering a blueprint cabinet but could not find anything within my budget even searching some sources for used items.

At about the same time I was finishing up a large hard wood floor installation and had some material left over. The flooring planks were 2 inches wide. I made up the drawer frames with those and used 1/8 inch hard board for the bottoms. Each drawer was sized to hold 77 standard sized Micro-Trains boxes. Then I built a cabinet out of 1/2 inch cabinet grade plywood and installed the drawers using heavy duty full extension drawer slides. Ran out long enough oak flooring scraps after 8 drawers and still have room in the cabinet for a couple more drawers. I really need to get those drawers done as I have all the others full and then some. Photos below

With the shorter scraps of flooring I made up a stackable tray train box to travel to shows. This is shown in the first photo on top of the main cabinet.

You would be surprised how much something like this weighs, especially if you load up some of the drawers with locomotives. I have mine on casters so I can easily move it out from under my staging yard where it normally sits.

Pictures didn't show up. Thanks for sharing, I'm hoping to buy something rather than build but this is interesting and good stuff if I were to go that route too, thanks for sharing. Would love to see pics too.

Very nice, don't have any of those for now so I'll have to look at other options.

    Thanks

Steve, I didn't either. I got these from a building materials reclaim center in town. I don't know what their "official" name is, but they are where contractors take (sell) materials removed from remodeling jobs. I've found these facilities in every state we lived in up and down the east and gulf coasts.

I never thought about that, I'll have to give it a look and see what I come up with. Thanks!

I store most of my trains on a layout. I'm surprised it's not a more popular option.

Somebody who knows the meaning of 'enough trains'!

Unfortunately I don't have room for that option!

At one time I had a cabinet of roughly similar design. Custom built, on heavy duty casters. Worked great, but was as you noted, of some significant weight. Can't find a photo of it. It was great. Should have kept it. :(
