According to the File name, this would be somewhere on the CB&Q Racetrack in Chicago or environs in August 2006. Taken from the Southwest chief. But I honestly have no idea where specifically.

To continue in my series of "Distracted Driving" photos, this was taken while heading south bound on Texas Highway 6 just north of Brian/College Station. I was able to pull over to the shoulder and put the car in park first. I think this was an SD40-2 once upon a time. UP calls it an SD40N after they rebuilt it. They are showing up on the locals a lot these days.

Lancaster & Chester 9548, a former CN GP-40-2LW, is seen at Fort Lawn, SC on 06/27/2018. She arrived at the L&C from North Carolina's Yadkin Valley RR, a sister road also owned by Gulf & Ohio Railways.

Russ, any idea why the N designation on the rebuild? Maybe because it was rebuilt at North Little Rock Jenks shop?

Weird, but the "N" stands for Nexus, the computer system that replaced the -2 components from EMD.

Correct, it is essentially what other railroads have called a Dash3 upgrade. the N stands for the Nexus computer system installed. Although, some units have been renumbered and redesignated before they actually made it in for the upgrade. Not many, but a few.

Interesting to see the intake snow shields. And also that spark arrestor screening is different....

I had to look up "CSOR". Apparently "Connecticut Southern RR". Somehow I am not familiar with such an operation. Need to locate a system map or similar, it try and understand their history/predecessors, etc.

It's a class 3 that connects with CSX at Springfield in the north and CSX at New Haven in the south.
Connecticut has 3 "class 3" railroads

Just briefly, by any chance do you know the predecessor companies/history? "New Haven" of course hints at maybe the NYNH&H? But Springfield is perhaps NYC(B&A?)? B&M? MEC?

I know that it's part of Genesee & Wyoming Railroads. A holding company. I will look up the history.

IIRC, the tracks were part of the New Haven. Though beyond that, no clue.

    Here is a quote:
The railroad began operations in 1996 and was acquired by RailAmerica in 2000.[2] Genesee & Wyoming acquired the railroad as part of its acquisition of RailAmerica in 2012.[4][5]

Traffic comes mainly from construction materials, as well as food products. The CSO hauled around 23,000 carloads in 2008.[2] The tracks are also shared with Amtrak passenger trains.

Amtrak. That should mean tracks are good for some decent speeds. That does look like fairly clean and fresh ballast.
