But, an ill educated media... Oh well: http://www.kpax.com/story/37480018/locomotive-fire-prompts-evacuation-scare CRFD not communicating with MRL, or vice versa. The engine becomes a car. They ignore the buffer car. Talk about the engine fuel, obviously unaware of the fact engines carry their own fuel supply. Don't research that engines have these things happen. That such specific fires don't have explosions. Etc, etc...
Blown turbo? I saw the a similar thing just north of Palmer Lake, CO, but BNSF kept the manifest train rolling to summit of the grade where they were met by the Monument FD. Had they stopped where the engine started smoking profusely, they would not have been able to restart the train on the grade. Those GEez were wrung out on that grade.
Yikes. I've seen videos of diesel vehicles in "runaway" mode, where a piston fails and the engine starts to consume the engine oil as fuel. There's no way to stop it and the engine revs faster and faster until connecting rods fail and the engine breaks apart. Good grief, the news story intones that the entire town was within minutes of total destruction.
Good thing the burning fuel never reached the fuel rods in the nuclear reactor in the front of the "engine car"..... Get George Lucas, or that Spielberg fella' on the phone-this has the makings of an awesome disaster movie!!!!
Yum! Diesel fuel flavored hotdogs! Delicious! I DO love the smell of diesel fuel exhaust. Especially if it's from a locomotive. Doug
