I am greatly confused now trying to shop online for larger sheets of the unknown (subject line).

I used a builders insulated foam board for my base top over the plywood and it is fine for the purpose I have (this is not shaping material) but I'm looking for the name of the material you can shape/carve easily-possibly Polystyrene since I am working on other track elevations and mountain/hill areas and the ability to carve out water features rivers/lakes.

Michaels craft store sells material like I am looking for but in small pieces and very costly.

Anyone know exactly the name of the material I can search for to locate larger sheets maybe 2 to 4" thick?

I just found this pic in the random pictures going by. This looks like exactly what I am looking for on the top layers...no clue what to search for as a product name?

Jeff, that is extruded foam. One of the brand names is Foamular. That is the pink foam (Owens Corning) . The Dow foam (blue) doesn't have a cute name.

I see you are in Newark, CA. The Home Depot off Whipple in Union City sometimes has the pink foam in stock, as does the one in San Leandro off Davis St. usually at the far back of the store, where the insulation is.

I have a bit of spare, depending on how much you are looking for. PM me.

Dow uses the trademarked name "STYROFOAM," but it's widely known as Blue Board in the construction business. I've had some success finding it at lumber yards when the local home center did not have any. Of course, I'm not in California.

These extruded polystyrene insulation products often have a plastic film vapor barrier on one or both sides. You should peel off the film before using it on your railroad. It comes off more easily than you might expect.

I used a heat gun to peel off the film at low temp on the other foam board, the silver side would not peel off easily without heat. I still need to go search this weekend for this product thanks to everyone's input I hope to start stacking my elevations on this "3day" weekend (y)

If you had "silver sided" foam, that is not the same stuff as the pink/blue extruded foam. When I was first starting my layout, I ordered a whole bunch of the blue foam from Pacific Supply. Delivered right to my driveway.
