Hi everyone, Below are some pictures I took from the N scale layout Somewhere West at the Swiss Convention held in Adliswil in October 2006. My friends Daniel Roth and Lucien Wiss (from France) did an excellent job to create a canyon that could be located in Colorado or New Mexico. Notice the Abo Canyon style bridges. Modelled era is late 1990s to present. A Rio Grande coal train exits the westend tunnel From the same spot, but looking in the other direction, I caught a Rio Grande manifest descending the grade. Before I could reach the remote station, an eastbound Union Pacific mixed freight followed the Rio Grande. At the station, the California Zephyr heading West crosses the Interstate road.
On the bridge location we can see a BNSF intermodal coming from the East. It pulls autroacks, trailers and containers at the end that you can see in the distance. Nscale definitely allows us long train. Then came an eastbound Union Pacific double stack train. The same train shot with a larger angle lense. You can see UP acquired SP.
The Rio Grande Coal train Now as a tunnel motor lover, here came my favorite train : a 53 coal loads train pulled by 4 TMs : Rio Grande SD40T-2 5364, SP SD40T-2 8536, Cotton Belt SD45T-2 8289 and Rio Grande SD40T-2 5359 Same train seen between the 2 bridges Same train see from a larger angle I hope you enjoyed the show. How lucky I am to operate my Rio Grande / Southern Pacific motive power on this spectacular layout. Jean-Edouard
Those are great pictures!! At first I thought the very 1st picture was real. I hope I can do work that good when I get to that point. I'm still procrastinating about laying the rest of my track.( The main is up and running) Craig
By accident I was in Switzerland at the time and visited the convention. For everybody living here in the San Francisco Bay Area, I wish we would have a meeting like that in our neighborhood. The quality that was shown in each of the scales was remarkable and I have hardly seen this qualitiy every in one of our shows. Thanks for the photos and let me tell you that the Belgium delegation was very impressive. Is there a similar convention in Belgium? It would be worth going there.
The modeler has captured areas of the west that resemble Arizona and New Mexico. The only negative critique regarding the modeling is... the brush is perhaps a little to spring time green for desert areas. Different shades of brush from a dead bush-tan to a forest green would add much to the scenes. Shame on me for nit-picking. The overall effect is superb and I like the Abo Canyon influence. The rock work and earth slides along with the coloring are superb. Keep bringing back your pictures.
It was the first time I went to the Swiss US Modelrailroad Convention. It is byfar the best place in Europe to see great US layouts. Selection is severe. Your feedback would mean that quality here in Switzerland was even higher than in the USA... I would be very interested in getting other feedbacks. I can tell you Overland's manager came especially in Switzerland as a VIP guest and enjoyed this convention a lot. Actually being French, now living in Belgium, I helped my French friends who did Somewhere West. Next big US trains show in Europe where Somewhere West will be exhibited: 1st US Convention in Germany (in Frankfurt) 6-7 October 2007 http://www.us-convention-brd.de/ TM
I have seen it like that. After a good rain, that they do get out there every so often, things look a little more green for a week or so. And the wild flowers go nuts for a short period.
Green After A Rain Storm You are so right and there would be water in the creek...ahh...more like a flash flood, newly moved earth and rocks and water left in the creek. This modeler did a great job...I do agree!
Excellent photos and supurb work. The soft soil erosion under the rock face realy caught my eye. You put a lot of thought into your scenery, loved it...John
Really awsome. Those pictures epitomize why I model trains and why I like N scale. I hope one day to do as well.
That is a superb layout. If that is the standard of layouts at the convention, I really should go across to Switzerland to see for myself. Wonderful work.
Excellent work and really good photo's. I could imagine getting lost in the "zone" watching trains rumble past this beautiful scenario, also excellent choice of colour ( black ) for the "terrain" boards out front, really brings your visual focus to the scenery and trains rather than blending in with the scenery of the layout. I have decided that i will use black on my front terrain following boards in the future having seen how good it is on your layout. Well done! Eliot
Magnificent scenery, along with superb attention to composition and detail. The backdrop color really works. And who doesn't like tall steel girders with concrete piers??? More thumbs than are on my hands!
