Southbound through Kennesaw GA about 11:30am on September 18, 2018 and yes, I know I should have been working instead of staring out a window.

An eastbound grain train surprises the photographer, who was moving uphill for a higher vantage point, and hastily set up a grab shot.

That's some beautiful power, especially for helpers. But take a single C&O Allegheny and that'll show what helper power really was.
Didn't mean to hijack those lovely power. I just wanted to plug an engine whose recorded results out performed all others, but were never were recognized before diesels took over.

    Hytec,
Are those overfire jets on the firebox? D&RGW engines serving Salt Lake City were required by city ordinance to have them for smoke abatement.

Hemi, I have no idea. I was never a student of steam locomotive engineering, just a lover of their perfection in the last days,

What a great power set to catch Kurt. It is awesome to see an SD45 still earning it's keep with that other modern riff raff. :D

Sure looks like overfire jets on the Allegheny. They were awesome looking (and performing) engines. 2-6-6-6.

Not a clue. If you Google C&O Allegheny Photos, there might be some backup info with the photo I copied.

Jim, how do you identify Overfire Jets and what is their purpose? I don't think I've ever heard the term.

The round things on the side of the firebox. They were also called "Smoke Consumers" and in theory added more air to the firebox to promote complete combustion of the coal. The NYC was a big user of them on their locomotives.
