I'm modeling Loveland, OH, my current home town in the 40's-50. Durring that time the town was served by the B&O and Pennsy with an interchange between the two. There was a fairly large wooden tower at the junction but I only have a couple of small, far away pictures of the tower. It appears to be a standard tower but I can't find any more wooden towers. It seems most of the PRR structures are brick.

Here is a reference shot of the tower -

It can be seen in the upper right hand corner picture.

Can someone point me in the direction of similar towers or drawings?

    Dave,
Thanks, that is the best I have seen yet. That is actually pretty darn close to the tower I am looking for, maybe a little bit smaller but I bet the basic design is the same.

Tony, just for grins, search Google "Images" for - PRR Tower - and see what you get (lotsa WOOD ones), though I'm guessing that's a BeanO tower in your photo (looks like minimal roof overhang/soffit). Window spacing seems unusual also. Good luck on your quest. Bob C.

I have spent the past few nights Googling, Binging, and Yahooing - PRR, Pennsylvania, Tower, Interlock, Structure etc. etc. I have found some more interesting information but no more usefull pictures of similar towers.

It is definitely a PRR tower. I have talked to people that worked in it. It was built around 1913 if I remember correctly and was razed in the 70's after PC abandoned the line.

I found this site last night that had some additional pictures of the area...

I have found more info searching for Little Miami Railroad, which is the entity that leased the lines to PRR.

    http://homepage.mac.com/jjakucyk/Transit1/prr/index.html

Still no luck with the tower although there were some additonal pictures of the station that I hadn't seen before and in the B&O section some pictures of the B&O station and bridges across the Little Miami river.

I have a friend searching the Cincinnati Railroad Club archives to see what he can come up with. I went to the meeting last Thursday to look but the head of the archives wasn't there so we were not quite sure of his orginzational scheme and where to look.

On a side note, we saw an incredible slide presentation of railway photo's taken in and arround Cincy, Ludlow KY, Dayton, Columbus, Athens, Chillicothe and other points in the area. The photos date between 46' and 49'.

I would have never believed that a PRR Baldwin Centepede ever came to Cincinnati Union Terminal if I hadn't seen the picture of it Thursday night. The scans of the entire collection will be donated to the railway club when cataloging is complete. The son of the gentleman who was taking them gave the presentation. His Dad was going to throw them out but the son realized the importance of the images.

Just to confuse things, the East Columbus tower picture that I posted was on PRR/B&O trackage, and the caption indicates that it was a B&O tower with B&O staff.

Tony - If you have an Ohio library card, you can access the Sanborn Fire Maps for Ohio here:

    http://www.oplin.org/content/sanborn-maps

While they don't have drawings of the building faces, there are drawings of locations and footprints. Might have some useful info for you.

    Bob,
I have all the Sanborn maps for Loveland. 1889, 1905, 1911, 1923, 1926, and 1946. They have been helpfull determining when the station was built and track allignment for the time frame I am modeling, 1947-1950. I'm not sure how much I trust using the Sanborn maps for sizing of buildings though. They give a good overall picture of how the town was laid out and have shown me buildings that I didn't know about as there is no sign of them remaining.

    Still digging.

Here is what I have come up with so far by compiling the various images I have been able to uncover and looking at similar towers...

The early version is from the 1913 era. There was very bad flood that year and I'm not sure if the tower was torn down and rebuilt after that. The next pictures I can find are from the 70's and the tower window arrangement is much different.

The picture that I found shows "Loveland" in a PRR sign on the side of the tower
