Hi All -- just started cutting out a batch of 10 well cars for my new railroad. Im hopefully going to be painting them in the next week, and I am looking for the right paint. I need 2 types - the TTX Yellow that is so commonly seen, and also that reddish not quite rust color often seen on rail cars. I prefer to stick with acrylic paints (I commonly use Vallejo Model Color and Model Air) but I am willing to try other brands

    Thanks
    TIM

Model Master Boxcar Red works well for the standard freight car color

Polly scale and floquil, the standard railroad paint for decades, was discontinued a few years ago. Model Railroad Hobbyist Magazine did a huge conversion chart project to determine matches in other brands of paint. There was a TTX yellow in the PS/F line, but it is paler than most factory painted TTX models from Athearn and others. Model Master Cadmium Yellow is a match for that color. It also says Vallejo Game Air Moon Yellow is a match. If you are looking for a brighter, richer yellow, try Model Master Reefer Yellow. Badger Model Flex has a Trailer Train yellow, but that might be the early yellow and not the TTX yellow. I thought they changed the shade at one point. You could also try Railbox yellow. Both Badger and Model Master make this color. The railroad series in Badger’s Model Flex has a lot of different yellows. You can check out their website, but make sure to click on ‘view larger color chart’ at the bottom for a better view of the colors.
If you are weathering, an exact match to any existing cars shouldn’t be a big deal.

If you join the Model Railroad Hobbyist Magazine web site -- which is free to join -- you can download their "Guide to acrylic painting ... in a post-Floquil world." The Guide contains the big chart referenced above by Mr. Trainiac. It lists the Floquil-equivalent colors from the Model Master, Vallejo-MicroLux, and MODELflex lines. If there is no exact match to a Floquil color, the Guide provides mixing instructions so you can create the matching color.

Since it costs nothing to subscribe to the MRH site, downloading this Guide is pretty much a no-brainer!
