I can't count how many trips we took on the North Coast Limited when I was a kid from Montana to Chicago and then onto Indiana on the South Shore Line to visit relatives. I think I enjoy the trip as much as the destination. Here's a quick video of the North Coast Limited right in my back yard.

I have ridden over Homestake a number of times on a train when I was a kid and I agree. What a beautiful ride over that pass. We go over it fairly often on I-90 and love looking at the high trestle. I also enjoy watching the Northern Pacific and Milwaukee Road tracks parallel each other once you pass Garrison Junction into Missoula and beyond. Many of the old trestles are still in place. This one at Saint Regis is one of my favorites. The trestle is still up with the exception of the approach spans. You can see the Northern Pacific tracks passing underneath to the right.
It has been a while since I last looked at this site. I usually come down from the north, and hit I-90 to go west. Isn't there a golf course at the eastern end now?
