I've been eyeing the footage created with Tilt Shift lenses. These lenses make a regular camera into an old bellows camera. This gives you the ability to control where the depth of field is within a frame by tilting the lens just like an old box camera bellows would.

It seems like an ideal lens type for photographing model trains and real trains. Here is a quick sample of the effect:

There is a product out there called a Lensbaby that one can buy: http://lensbaby.com

A lot of people have opted out of buying one and simply make their own by altering their own lens.

A link to some how to examples for building your own: http://cow.mooh.org/projects/tiltshift/diyexamples.html#plungercamclassic

If you use the search term - tilt shift lens how to - you will find a lot of tutorials on how to make these lenses. Youtube is full of videos that show them being made.

One thing, I might mention, when using these lenses for macro work like this. Sometimes, actually often, you can get better results by mounting the lens backward in the plungercam. We also used to use a smaller disc than the smallest f stop aperture, mounted on wires across the lens back, as what was called a "spider", to get even more depth of field.
