That will take some investigation. When the Milwaukee ordered their new GP-38s, they ordered them all with smaller fuel tanks to keep the weight down on the light rail of this route. There's a video with a brief mention of this route.
Yes I'm aware of that and the video, which is why I'm wondering. I'll check Micheal Sol's site. The Athearn GP38-2 is correct with the smaller tanks used for the light rail branch lines. http://www.ebay.com/itm/261555082961?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
One small problem with that video narration. "Train 801". This was supposedly filmed in 1973. That train number was not in use until December 1, 1974. If the filming date is correct, it should be #163.
They might have run an SD40-2 up that way. But that would have been the great exception. They tried them elsewhere on lighter rail, as well as the GE U33 &36C units. Often with derailments, or broken rails as a result. Diesel power on the NMD would have varied, depending upon your time frame. F units, SW type switchers, GP9, SD7, 9, and 10. The first place the GP38-2 engines were ever regularly assigned was there. Very late, there was even GP20 power used. Does the Athearn fuel tank represent 1700 gallon capacity?
Thanks Ken, it's ironic as I just finish an article (Dan Lewis) in the 1st quarter 200 Milwaukee Railroader where you had assisted in the diesel research list contained on page 14. It looks like I'll need a GP9's, I still haven't decided on the time but it will definitely be after 1952 and before 1972. Here's the picture of the GP38-2 from Athearn, the fuel tank is pretty darn small it appears to represent the loco in the video.
Charlie Russell Choo Choo was parked less than a mile from Spring Creek, at the BNSF portion of the wye. I agree Ken, sometimes Montana makes it so easy to photograph.
The dinner train is well worth it. We took a trip on it and during dinner, the train crew involved the passengers in a murder mystery play. It was well done and the dinner was excellent.
Sadly, that's why I won't ride their dinner train. I just want to sit, eat and enjoy the views. I don't want the side activities.
The Roy/Winifred where it splits off in north Lewistown. Hilger MT, north to Winifred, east to Roy. Roy Depot
Oooo. I so badly want to crawl into the attic, etc, of that Roy depot. See if there is a train order.....
Its in remarkable condition Ken. The ROW between Moore and Lewistown. Looking towards Moore Towards Lewistown. "Ghost Trestle" I love these little guys, now they would have just used a culvert.
