Group, In 1974, the Southern Railway took delivery of 70 ton, 5277 cubic foot capacity box cars from Pullman-Standard. Different from the majority of other cars of the IPD era, the Southern cars had a full set of "waffles"—stamped impressions into the car's side panels which were intended to accommodate lading equipment. Beginning with P-S lot 9725, Southern Railway would eventually roster nearly 5,000 of these box cars. Found anywhere, the Southern P-S 50' 'Waffle' Box Car is the epitome of a signature classic! Blaine, I already purchased 7 of the cars. I'm probably going to follow through with another order in a few weeks, if any are left. I really have to thank you for this car. It is one we have needed for ages. Now if only we had 50' PC&F 16' door boxes, 19k corn syrup cars and PD 3000 and PD 5125 covered hoppers
Happy to see these, they look really nice. See them in trains a lot, in boxboard and brick service. Now to see what Mr. Budget can handle, because I would like to order about a dozen!
I may get one even though it's not necessary for what I model, but WOW it sure is a great looking car though!
At long last they're finally here! If only I had not already blown my railroad budget this month on my RS11.... Hope there are a couple DME's left next month!!! Any chance you'll start a layaway program
Blaine, this is a pretty signature car. Any reason in particular you didn't tool the Pullman roof? Jason
Group, thank you for your comments--we are quite enthusiastic about this release as well! @ Jason--thanks for you input; however, I am not sure that I follow. The majority of P-S 5277 "Waffles" Box Cars were delivered with a Stanray diagonal panel roofs and Youngstown doors--which is what we have offered. Please let me know what you had in mind when referring to a 'Pullman' roof? Best regards, Blaine Hadfield Vice President, Product ExactRail
Did these make there way to the west? I model SP and am focusing on 1983, but I would like to make sure a couple here and there would be believable.
Well to start, here's the exact number you did on the CSX car. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=230761 And here's the same number you did for a SOU car albeit a different paint scheme. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=614525 And here's two PS waffle boxes that have PS roofs. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2730398 Here's a DME car. http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/dme/dme05420gga.jpg Another SOU car. http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/sout/sou528317asb.jpg And another great view. http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/sout/sou528373gea.jpg Jason
Blaine, I think he was refering to the "bowtie" style corrigations on the roof. Looking at your HO model you can see this clearly: http://www.exactrail.com/media/cata...e5fb8d27136e95/e/p/eps-90310-ns-boxcar-03.jpg But the N scale model has the X panel pattern, which I think is incorrect for the cars: http://www.exactrail.com/media/cata...5/e/n/en-nscale-ns-50ft-waffle-box-car-03.jpg
Ahhh, got it. Should have looked at the HO model first. Anyone have a shot of the Stanray roof? Jason
Yes they did. Saw them on the Coast line alot during the 80's and 90's. Still see them in Bakersfield from time to time.
I ordered a bunch today and to answer a previous question they are out west a lot. I still see plenty of Southen, NS and CSX waffles here in CA. Looks like it sure does have the wrong roof! Just Great! Not happy about that. Oh and they have 70 ton trucks not 100 ton like the announcement says.
Blaine, did *any* of these cars come delivered with a Stanray roof? I can't find any examples in my searches. In every other respect this looks like a very nice model that I was highly anticipating. But the roof issue, combined with the fact that shipping to Canada will cost me $25.25 (unless I order $150 worth) means that I will be sitting this one out. Very disappointing. -Gary
I'm fairly certain they should have the standard P-S "bow-tie" roof. Same roof that was used on the HO version of the model. I don't think there are/were any P-S prototypes built with an X-panel roof.
How could such a big mistake slip by like this? If I'd known I wouldn't of bought any until the roof mistake was fixed. For the price of these cars I feel this is unacceptable. If the roof is a separate piece like I think it is how about Exactrail offering free replacement roofs for everyone who has bought these already? I think that would be the right thing to do if they want to keep the respect and business of N scalers.
Clearly, I misspoke in my response. The model should have the bowtie style roof, as mentioned by Jason. We are committed to offering the most accurate models, and I believe that we can offer a solution. We will tool a new roof and make it available free of charge to those who purchased the N-scale P-S 50' 'Waffle' Box Car. As you would expect, it will take a few weeks to have this ready, and so we will make an announcement for the roof when we have finished cutting the molds and running the plastic parts. With this announcement, we will give more information about how one would contact us for the replacement roof. For those of you who have sought an N-scale bowtie-style roof for scratchbuilding projects, we will also make the roof available to purchase on our website. I don't know how anyone can complain about that! I call that excellent customer service. Sent from my Motorola Electrify using Tapatalk 2
