It appears to me the cyclist was riding head down, not paying any attentio, and had circumvented the gate.

Such a beautifully engineered ROW. The video almost looks virtual. I suppose I should wistfully hope that this sort of thing never happens again, but you can't fix stupid.

Sadly, I see the cause of this at the children's museum where I volunteer. Daily, Moms are staring at their phones while their little ones run around wildly yelling "look at me, look at me". No parental warmth, no involvement, and no guidance whatsoever. And they "wonder" why their teenage kids don't pay attention, have no clue of the outside world, take no responsibility for their own actions, become involved with unsavory groups that welcome them....

Sorry for the soapbox, but the answer is so simple. It starts at home. Money, government programs, school guidance counselors, nothing helps unless the parents are involved from birth and take responsibility until the child (children) are successfully on their own. Then the parents must continue to hug them for being successful. Being a parent never ends. I'm so proud of my two it hurts, and they're in their late fifties.

Quite the post, Hank. Short and direct to the bullseye.

Ends up that this guy was one of three people hit by a Brightline train since Jan. 12 when the line started operations. Police reports show that in all three incidents, none heeded warning lights nor the gates. Two of the incidents were fatal, including the guy in the above video.

In the cab of this train were four people -- the engineer, another engineer, the conductor and an FEC supervisor. Notwithstanding, attorneys are circling, one of which said “the issue is whether or not the gates provided adequate warning.”

    Um, the gates were down.

I heard no horn sounding during the video, merely the engine's bell. Apparently the surrounding community was successful in convincing a judge and/or the railroad's management that a horn sounding for grade crossings was intrusive to the residents, thus should not be allowed. Though it is questionable whether a sounding horn would have had any more effect on the biker than the flashing lights, sounding bells, and gates across the road.
